Before the 2004 football season started, questions lingered in
the minds of Badger fans who had no idea what to expect upon
entering the first game with a made-over team from last season.
After an upset at Purdue, developing an unstoppable defensive front
and tabbing a 7-0 record and a No. 6 ranking, many of these
questions can be answered. Still, Wisconsin has four games
remaining that could change the answers and make for an upsetting
end to the storybook season. Here are some questions asked prior to
the season opener against the University of Central Florida.

The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team (2-0-0) may have already
had the season's first face-off last weekend, but there is still
much to be said about the team as well as the 32 regular season
games that remain.

\In control"" might be an understatement to describe the way the
Wisconsin women's hockey team played over the weekend. ""Complete
domination"" may be the better words to sum up the Badgers'
devastating 8-1 and 11-0 victories over Wayne State on Friday and
Saturday night at the Kohl Center.

So it's another weekend at the good 'ole UW and you're asking
yourself 'What the heck am I going to do?' The football team is at
OSU disposing of the Buckeyes again and you are probably right in
the thick of midterms. Looks like you're going to have a fun-filled
weekend of studying ahead of you.

Things are starting to look up for the UW women's volleyball
team (1-2 Big Ten, 7-3 overall). After dropping their first two Big
Ten games at home last weekend, the Badgers are riding Wednesday's
30-28, 30-20, 30-16 victory over Northwestern into Sunday's home
match against No. 19 Illinois (1-1, 9-2).

The UW women's volleyball team (0-2 Big Ten, 6-4 overall) opened
the Big Ten season on the wrong foot with losses against No. 20
Ohio State (2-0, 11-0) and No. 4 Penn State (2-0, 10-0) at the
Field House this past weekend. These two defeats mark the first
time since 1987 that the Badgers kicked off their conference season
0-2, and the first time since 1995 that the team lost two
consecutive Big Ten games at home.

The NBA season may not tip off for another 40 days (not like I'm
counting or anything), but there is a rumor stirring down in Miami
that deserves some discussion. The Miami Herald reported Thursday
that Shaquille O'Neal has received messages from Michael Jordan
regarding his desire to play alongside O'Neal this season. Turns
out O'Neal was not amused and has no interest in playing with
Jordan.

Things have not gone according to plan for the Wisconsin ground
attack so far this season. With three healthy, game-experienced
running backs expected to return alongside two freshmen with bright
futures, the running backs were projected, as usual, to be the key
component to the Wisconsin offense.

Last Saturday I woke up in confusion to my blaring alarm
wondering why my slumber stopped at the early hour of 9 a.m. on a
weekend. After crawling out of bed, I quickly remembered; it was
the first Badger football game of the season, a day I had been
looking forward to all summer.

If one had to pick a word to describe Amy Bladow, it might be a
difficult task to find a single word that sums up everything about
her. For the sophomore middle blocker on the No. 23 Wisconsin
women's volleyball team that has a future ambition to open up a
clothing shop, has said her favorite athlete is Dennis Rodman and
is decked out in a nose ring and a tongue ring that she keeps in
during game time, the best word to describe her could be
'eclectic'.

The University of Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels should be feeling a
little nervous coming into Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday. With a
shortened practice week for UNLV, multiple players out due to
injuries and the 23-5 embarrassment of the Badgers on their home
turf last season, Wisconsin has the scene set up perfectly for
payback.

After a triumphant performance at the Big Ten Rowing
Championship this past weekend, the No. 13 Wisconsin women's crew
team is now celebrating the recognition of four rowers in
particular. Senior captains Nicole Weir, Christina Strasser junior
Nikki Lennart and sophomore Kari Harmon were all named to the
all-Big Ten Rowing team following the weekend.

The tradition will continue for the UW men's rowing team as it
prepares to compete against Washington this weekend for possession
of the infamous W Cup. The Badgers and Huskies both have high
expectations coming into the match-up with their preseason rankings
of fifth and second, respectively.

It is always hard to leave home, but after Sunday's contest
against Purdue (7-6 Big Ten, 17-9 overall), the Wisconsin men's
basketball team (8-4, 17-6) will bid adieu to the Kohl Center for
the 2003-04 season. Though Wisconsin is riding high on a 26-game
win streak at home, Purdue already proved once this season that it
is not an easy team to beat. Back on Jan. 14 these two teams met
and battled until the final seconds. During the closing seven
minutes of the contest, the Badgers climbed back into the game
after being down nine points. Junior guard Devin Harris could have
been a hero with his three-point attempt from the top of the key,
but unfortunately for the Badgers, the shot rimmed out and they
received their first Big Ten loss of the season, 53-51.There is no
doubt that Purdue will continue to use the same defensive pressure
on Sunday that it has used all season. The Boilermaker defense has
held its opponents to 58.1 points per game and 39 percent shooting,
both Big Ten bests. The Boilermakers have many players that excel
in their game all-around. One player in particular that contributes
to making Purdue a tough team to beat is senior guard Kenneth Lowe.
He is not only the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, but also
the team's leading scorer. During the first meeting against the
Badgers, he tallied a team high 13 points and overall he is still
leading the team with his average of 13.8 points per game.Sophomore
guard David Teague adds extra strength by complimenting Lowe in the
backcourt. It is not common that a guard leads a team in rebounding
but Teague's six boards per game are a best for Purdue. Besides
dominating the glass for the Boilermakers, his 11points per game
prove that he can score as well. The Boilermakers recently faced
their own off-the-court troubles when senior center Ivan Kartelo
was arrested last weekend for punching a bouncer and at press time,
it was uncertain whether his playtime would be affected.During the
opening stages of the season, Purdue looked like they had all the
tools necessary to make up one of the better teams in the Big Ten.
Besides beating Wisconsin earlier this season, the Boilermakers
were able to knock off the two current teams at the top of the Big
Ten; Michigan State and Illinois. Since those victories though,
things have not gone as expected. After their 76-70 upset against
the Spartans, they have gone 3-5 thanks to stubbing their toes
against teams like Ohio State and Northwestern. While it would be
nice to make it 28 straight at the Kohl Center, the biggest thing
for the Badgers is gaining momentum for their final two games on
the road. Wisconsin has proven it needs all the help it can get
away from home. Though they currently stand at third place in the
conference, a final win at home would do the trick to help the
Badgers inch closer to the Big Ten championship.
(02/10/04 6:00am)
Oh where, oh where, has the Badgers' backcourt gone? Did it
leave with Boo Wade's arrest last Wednesday or is this just a bump
in the road? Lately, junior guard Devin Harris seems to be the only
spark in the backcourt with his offensive leadership. Wade's
absence from the starting lineup not only put UW out one starting
guard but also seems to have put the rest of the guards, minus
Harris, out of their game.

After an explosive offensive performance from junior guard Devin
Harris in Wednesday's victory over Minnesota, the UW men's
basketball team (6-1 Big Ten, 15-3 overall) will take their
momentum to the road for their match-up against Northwestern (3-5,
8-11) on Saturday.

While the students were away, the UW women's basketball team
(1-4 Big Ten, 7-8 overall) still had to play. Though winter break
is usually a time for relaxation, the team did not have a chance
for much time off as they played seven games over the
holiday.

It is always hard to say goodbye and things are no different for
the Wisconsin women's volleyball team, as they will have to bid
farewell to their group of seniors once the team's season draws to
a close.
