After the Wisconsin Badgers’ (3-13 Big Ten , 7-19 overall) 90-65 blowout home loss to the Maryland Terrapins in early January, junior power forward Avyanna Young called junior Maryland center Brionna Jones, “probably the best player” she had ever defended after the Terrapins center tallied 22 points and nine rebounds on Young and UW’s frontcourt.

Less than 12 months ago, Frank Kaminsky drooped on a podium chair between guard Josh Gasser and head coach Bo Ryan with his left hand buried in his messy black hair. His body language told the story of what had ensued earlier that evening. The Badgers had just lost the National Championship Game to Duke and Kaminsky, visibly depressed, was addressing the media. The normally playful and cheery Kaminsky was barely audible and, after four minutes of fielding questions, the Wisconsin power forward walked off the media podium for his final time as a Badger.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ (3-13 Big Ten, 7-19 overall) relatively large senior class didn’t have the storybook ending it wanted. But the story of this Wisconsin senior class didn’t have a polished beginning or middle, either. So in that way, it was almost fitting that the Badgers lost on senior day to the Northwestern Wildcats (4-12, 15-13) 71-53 Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.

The Wisconsin Badgers (3-11 Big Ten, 7-17 overall) haven’t won a lot. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t going to try to finish on a strong note.

Nicole Bauman is ready to return home. After scoring 10 points in the Wisconsin Badgers’ (3-11 Big Ten, 7-17 overall) loss to the Michigan Wolverines Thursday evening, Bauman struggled yet again Sunday afternoon, scoring just eight points in their 67-57 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers (9-5, 17-9).
(02/12/16 2:24am)
Tuesday afternoon, hours after the Wisconsin Badgers (3-10 Big Ten, 7-16 overall) knocked off the Purdue Boilermakers 64-57, Nicole Bauman seemed fatigued just thinking about the kind of effort it took for the team to record their first win since mid-January.

For two years at Syracuse University, former Orange and current Wisconsin assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Sasha Palmer spent every day studying one of the most effective and dangerous defenses in college basketball.

Less than 12 months ago against the Purdue Boilermakers, senior Jacki Gulczynski made what would have been a game-winner, sending the Wisconsin Badgers into the second round of the Big Ten tournament. But the clock expired just before Gulczynski’s shot left her hands, and the Badgers fell to the Boilermakers, 58-56.

Last spring when Michala Johnson decided to forgo playing for the New York Liberty of the WNBA, Wisconsin head coach Bobbie Kelsey was ecstatic, and for good reason. The team was getting back a player who only two years earlier led the Badgers in both points and rebounds per game. And while Johnson was coming off her second ACL tear in the past five years, it wasn’t that long ago she was a first-team All-Big Ten performer.

Sunday afternoon before the Wisconsin Badgers (2-8 Big Ten, 6-14 overall) tipped off against the Michigan State Spartans (7-2, 16-4), all the focus in the Kohl Center was on UW’s “Think Pink” initiative, which raises awareness for breast cancer research. The nearly 10,000 fans in attendance all received pink Wisconsin basketball t-shirts and LED bracelets. Multiple announcements were made recognizing the fight against breast cancer. And both teams infused pink into their respective wardrobes.

Adele’s hit song “Hello” from her latest album 25 broke an internet record this week, needing only 87 days to reach one billion hits on YouTube. And while Wisconsin senior guard Tessa Cichy hasn’t quite taken a billion hits in a Badger uniform, she’s not far off. Like Adele, though, Cichy recently received an abrupt “hello from the other side.”
(01/27/16 12:44am)
Wisconsin senior guard Tessa Cichy’s competitive nature has been ingrained in her ever since she was a kid. And with the Badgers (2-6 Big Ten, 6-12 overall) currently reeling, Cichy and her teammates need it to shine now more than ever when they visit the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-3, 14-5) Wednesday night.

The Wisconsin Badgers (2-5 Big Ten, 6-11 overall), not the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-3, 12-6), have dug themselves a deep burrow that they soon hope to pop out of. With five Big Ten losses already, the Badgers are fighting for any win they can get, knowing full well their chance of postseason play is dwindling. Minnesota, on the other hand, enters the Kohl Center Saturday morning looking to win its third straight conference game and seventh straight against the Badgers en route to beginning its postseason surge.

The Wisconsin Badgers are trying to build the championship culture that the Maryland Terrapins currently have. But as any and every championship team knows, a basketball game is a full four quarters. The Badgers learned that cruel lesson Wednesday night after leading by five points after one quarter, and eventually falling to the Terrapins 90-65.

It’s rare for head coach Bobbie Kelsey to give her team a motivational speech before games. While her players likely could have used a little more inspiration in the locker room after two consecutive lethargic starts, Kelsey fully expects her team to be ready to go in their toughest challenge yet against Maryland (5-1 Big Ten, 16-2 overall) Wednesday at the Kohl Center.
(01/04/16 12:52am)
After opening the Big Ten season with a win earlier in the week, the Badgers (1-1 Big Ten, 5-7 overall) struggled in the first half of Sunday’s game en route to losing their first conference game of the season to the Michigan State Spartans (1-1, 10-3) 77-67.

Even after Thursday’s loss to the Florida Gators, the Wisconsin Badgers (3-6) were both optimistic and confident heading into today’s game with Green Bay (6-2). But after their 72-58 loss to the Phoenix, the Badgers’ frustration and disappointment put a damper on any cheerfulness they had coming into Sunday’s game.
