Some people spend the beginning of the semester re-adjusting to
Madison, buying textbooks and trying to start the school year off
on the right foot. I, on the other hand, spend this time looking
for the most miserable people around me and doing what every smart
American does in response to human sadness: figuring out how to
profit from it. And I've found just the right misery-literature
classes.

College presents many anxieties, but perhaps the most
nerve-wracking thing we do as students is introduce ourselves at
the first meetings of discussion sections. Whatever the course is,
first impressions are just as important in the classroom as they
are at parties. For 15 words or so, you have the attention of your
peers. Some of them are attractive, some of them are competing with
you, and all of them are sizing you up. And whatever you say can
seal your place in the discussion's social and academic hierarchy
for the rest of the semester.

For the more literal-minded thriller movie fans, there are only
two things one needs to know: Is it scary, and does it portray a
realistic danger? Cardinal Arts is here to break it down.

Before it arrived in theaters, \Mean Girls"" seemed like a bad
mix. In one corner, there was director Mark Waters, re-teaming with
young star Lindsey Lohan, to follow up the strong ""Freaky
Friday."" In the other corner, there was Tina Fey, head writer of
""Saturday Night Live,"" slated to adapt Rosalind Wiseman's book
and co-star in the film. But instead of an ugly joining of forces,
the collaboration between the two camps has turned out to be
another triumph for Waters and Lohan and a renaissance of freshness
for Fey.

Superlative people make mistakes, just like the rest of
us.??Richard Pryor??told plenty of jokes that fell flat, Jack
Niklaus hit plenty of balls into the rough and Julia Child??cooked
plenty of unpalatable meals. And now, with the release of \The Laws
of Attraction,"" starring Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore,
audiences are greeted with one of the most inelegant movies ever to
be made by two such superlatively elegant people.

As we tiptoe into the month of May, we count down the last days
of our semester, our school year and for a precious few
overachievers, our college careers. Now is the time to buckle down
for finals, take the last mental snapshots of a passing chapter in
our lives, and, most of all, settle unfinished business.

\Man on Fire"" sees Denzel Washington re-teaming with Tony
Scott, the director of 1995's ""Crimson Tide."" In one scene of the
new film, Christopher Walken describes Washington's character by
saying, ""Death is Creasy's art, and now he's painting his
masterpiece."" Scott couldn't sum up the movie's aim better
himself. In ""Man on Fire,"" audiences are presented with an
ambitious movie, where the violence is raw and all else is
overcooked.

On stage, Andrew WK is a throwback to a musical era that never
quite existed. He combines pulsing power chords from a three-guitar
band with his own hammering on a piano, all while showering
affection upon his fans like no one since Ozzy Osbourne in his
prime. On Sunday, WK headlined Party in the Park, delivering an
abbreviated, but blistering set through rain, wind and technical
problems, then signing autographs in the rain for an hour.
Afterwards, he talked to The Daily Cardinal about music, partying
and his connection to UW.

If you stand very close to me, you might notice a small scar in
front of my right ear. The scar is from surgery I underwent when I
was seven. After a long series of tests, a mysterious bump turned
out to be nothing serious, and a short procedure was required to
remove it. Ever since, there have been no after-effects other than
the scar.

Sunday evenings might be my favorite time of the week. While my
roommates work or sleep, I usually curl up to watch a movie and
spend my weekend's last waking hours in whatever imaginary world I
have rented.

Hollywood is short on action heroes right now. Sylvester
Stallone's career has been over since the '90s. Vin Diesel seems to
be avoiding making another hit at any cost. And Arnold
Schwarzenegger has traded sunglasses for neckties. But one gigantic
man with expressive eyebrows is standing out now as the bearer of
the macho torch. And with \Walking Tall,"" we get a third taste of
what could be an exciting action career for The Rock.

Last week, I was sitting in the ethnic studies room of Helen C.
White with my roommate Ben. We read in silence, when suddenly, out

UW-Madison and it all traces back to two UW grads.

My mother and I have a fun history of drinking together in
Madison. When I visited Madison for the first time in 2000, we went
to the Union Terrace and had beer together. More recently, when she
came out to help me move into my current apartment at the end of
the summer, we went to the Kimia Lounge, where she and I had
martinis and cigars.

I didn't spend this past spring break anywhere with palm trees.
I went home and spent my break eating, sleeping and listening to
\Heaven is a Place on Earth"" by Belinda Carlisle 15 times a day.
That's pretty much all I wanted out of spring break. But I still
felt pressure from others to be doing something bigger. And as I
listened to these people, I realized that we all need a little
reality check.

The other day, I saw something that depressed me. Walking
through Library Mall, I saw a small black lab--still a
puppy--leading a woman down the block. What saddened me was a sign
on the dog's back, which read, \Do not pet me. I am working."" This
bothered me for a couple of reasons.
