Through the first weekend of college football, the Big Ten showcased its depth and went 11-3, including No. 2 Ohio State’s 49-21 victory over conference opponent Indiana. Highlights included No. 11 Michigan’s 33-17 win against a depleted No. 17 Florida team, Purdue hanging on but ultimately falling to Heisman trophy winner Lamar Jackson and No. 16 Louisville 35-28 and Maryland outlasting No. 23 Texas 51-41 in Austin.

With 4:52 left in the second quarter, the Utah State Aggies took a timeout. Up 10-0 over the No. 9 team in the country, USU didn’t want to let UW back into the game.

“Welcome to college football Saturday” is a beautiful phrase. Hearing it means great games, fun performances by awesome players, rivalries and upsets are bound to happen. Even with all the excitement about the first week of games, often times like this past weekend, games turn out to be underwhelming. Thankfully, the slate of games this week is exciting. Let’s see what’s happening around college football.

Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin has a knack for being the center of attention. Whether he’s coaching in the NCAA or the NFL, in the south or out west, as a head coach or as an assistant, controversy and national headlines seem to follow the 42-year-old like his very own shadow.

After true freshman running back Jonathan Taylor exploded for 87 yards and a touchdown Friday night versus Utah State, Wisconsin fans stood up and took notice of who could possibly be the next heir to the Badgers’ long line of running backs.

The 2017 NFL offseason was fun, dramatic, exciting, rewarding, somber, unpredictable and emotional for a group of Wisconsin players that were trying to make their dreams of playing in the National Football League come true. Many Badgers had the opportunity to make an NFL squad, but, ultimately, only a few former UW standouts made a 53-man roster and will be on an active roster for the start of the 2017-’18 season. Still, even though many players were cut after an offseason of training with their respective squads, some Wisconsin players’ offseasons ended in pure joy, as their professional careers are just getting started.

I had fully written this column in my head by the end of the first quarter of Friday night’s game against Utah State. After 15 minutes of football in one of the most hyped football season for Wisconsin fans in recent memory, my mind had already been made up. What I came up with was less a fully-fledged piece than a string of incoherent expressions of anguish. Among some of these thoughts: The offensive line still isn’t up to UW standards; the running back trio was overrated; the receiving corps is still too inexperienced; the team as a whole is too undisciplined. It all culminated with one desperate conclusion: I really hope we’ll beat Middle Tennessee State in the Boca Raton Bowl this year.

Wisconsin offensive lines are held to a different standard given the history of the position in the program. And that standard wasn’t being met in the first half of the Badgers’ 59-10 win over Utah State.

Nearly eight months removed from their last game, the Wisconsin Badgers (1-0) looked the part of a rusty team in the first half of their 59-10 win versus the Utah State Aggies (0-1) on Friday night.

Much like Lil Wayne in the 2008 pop hit “Let it Rock” by Kevin Rudolf, I’m back like I forgot something (note: my similarities with Mr. Wayne end there). In my inaugural foray into the Sports section of the Daily Cardinal, whose Opinion section I’ve been known to frequent, I’m here to write about the position that could make or break the Badgers’ hope at an undefeated regular season, a Big 10 title shot and, dare I say it, an elusive playoff spot. That, of course, is the number two quarterback spot.

Despite the presence of record-setting running backs like Ron Dayne and Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin’s rushing attack has long been known more for its “plug-and-play” consistency than for the outstanding talents of any particular players. But after graduating tailbacks Corey Clement and Dare Ogunbowale, who accounted for almost three-quarters of the carries given to UW running backs last season, 2017 will test the Badgers ability to integrate new ball carriers into the offense.

After then-junior Trace McSorley and his rocket arm catapulted the Penn State Nittany Lions to a 38-31 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big 10 Championship Game last season, crushing the Badgers’ last hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff or the Rose Bowl, many Wisconsin fans started uttering the familiar mantra of “there’s always next year.”

As the Badgers gear up for the start of their season and their first game against the Utah State Aggies, they’ll be without one of their key veterans—star linebacker Jack Cichy. Cichy, who sustained a torn ACL on Aug. 10 during a practice, is now out for the season.
