Winter break is now over, and it is time for all of us at The
Daily Cardinal to shake the dust off our word processors and get
back to work. Surely we're in for four months of exciting breaking
news, insightful commentary and pulse-pounding investigative
reporting.

The Daily Cardinal's arts staffers picked some of the most
notable movies you might have forgotten to see amidst holiday
cheer.

After much deliberation, here are the top candidates in
considering five of the most influential directors and films of
American cinema from the last decade, as chosen by our Arts
staffers.

Racist. There has been a bit of a stir on the Daily Cardinal
opinion page recently regarding that word, as well as its relation
to a column written by Andrew Carpenter. I won't address the merits
of Carpenter's argument, I'm sure he can explain himself a lot
better than I can. But there was one aspect of the criticism his
article received that continued an all-too-common trend I've seen
on campus. It seemed that the natural, gut response from most
readers was to call Carpenter a racist.

The Campus Women's Center has been on a bit of an odyssey of late.
Ever since they were denied eligibility for General Student Service
Funds (better known as that pool of money where a couple bucks of
your segregated fees go every semester), the CWC has gone through a
seemingly endless series of appeals and hearings in an attempt to
gain funding for the 2010-'11 school year.

Everybody's hometown is known for something. Even my
non-descript suburban home of Apple Valley, Minn., has a few
(minor) claims to fame. We're the location of the Minnesota Zoo,
the home of the green Power Ranger and the place where some
homeless guy managed to live in the local high school undetected
for a month. But most notably, Apple Valley is known as the town of
Target.

As should be plainly obvious to anybody glancing at today's
opinion page, this past Tuesday Madison's Alcohol License Review
Committee rejected a proposal by District 8 Ald. Bryon Eagon to
create a permanent student position on the ALRC. The proposal had
previously been approved by the Common Council Organizational
Committee, a body akin to the Committee on Rules in the state
Legislature.

Acouple weeks ago, a crowd of conservatives held one of those
tea party events in Milwaukee, the kind where they wave signs
around decrying Obama's health-care reform plan and shouting words
like ""socialism"" and ""death panels."" One of the speakers at
this self-titled ""angry mob"" rally was Milwaukee County Executive
Scott Walker, who is currently seeking the Republican nomination
for governor.

Some time ago, a friend of mine took issue with a comment I made
about Madison's sometimes testy relationship with its business
community, disputing my claim that the city could be less than
friendly towards many of its economic engines from time to time.
Recently I found my exhibit A in the trials of the proposed Badger
Hall of Fame Grill from Scott Acker, owner of the Quaker Steak and
Lube restaurant in Middleton, who had planned to open a restaurant
in University Square. But now it is doubtful the restaurant will
ever open, due to the intense hassle Acker has had to go through to
open its doors.

The summer of 2009 is a season full of promising films. From
seeing another ""Harry Potter"" movie to the excitement of watching
Madison alum Michael Mann debut his locally filmed ""Public
Enemies,"" there are plenty of reasons to head to your local
theater this summer. Here are six films that are must-sees, even
when the weather gets warm.

This past February, the students of UW-Madison had a chance to
bring change to Associated Students of Madison. A brand new
constitution was put before the campus in the hopes of making the
organization relevant once again, structured to make ASM's
leadership more accountable and more closely connected to
students.

Let's create a hypothetical situation. Say you're in some sort
of trouble. Perhaps you ran your moped into the Abe statue, and
Biddy Martin isn't fond of Lincoln's new tire-track look. This
doesn't look particularly good for you, but surely you've got a
good explanation for your recent breach of UW protocol. Good thing
you've got due process and the opportunity to sort this whole mess
out, right?
(02/23/09 6:00am)
Be afraid, the new ASM constitution is coming to get you.

The year 2008 was a year of change in American film. The year
began by bringing us one of the most critically acclaimed
blockbusters in a long time with The Dark Knight,"" and an animated
feature as a legitimate Best Picture contender in Pixar's kiddie
sci-fi masterpiece ""WALL-E.""
