Nine years ago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison began using Canvas, and it’s difficult for students to imagine a world without it.
As freshmen arrived on campus this year, they eagerly unpacked their belongings from their parents’ mini-van and settled into their new homes — likely a dorm with a roommate or two.
University of Wisconsin-Madison students have just finished their first full weeks of school. Some other BIG 10 schools started two or three weeks ago, but UW-Madison holds off until the Wednesday after Labor Day for the first day of classes.
Classes have started for university and technical college students across Wisconsin. But after the rapid shuttering of University of Wisconsin System branch campuses, many students have no campus to return to.
Between the upcoming presidential election, recent mass shootings and increasing international tension, the pressure to be well-informed is higher now than ever.

Washington, D.C. is a paragon of public transportation in the United States. It upholds a reputation of a marvelous heavy rail system, recognized by many as one of the best metro rail systems in the world. This, along with e-bikes and numerous bus lines, give residents of the DMV many options for their morning commute. Needless to say, it’s a dream.
As a former campus tour guide, I was often asked what made the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus so special. My answer? For a long time, I would tell incoming students a variety of answers: Lake Mendota, gameday culture or lakeshore in the fall.
