At a press conference preceding their next game, the Washington Redskins owner, Dan Snyder, announced that the team will be changing their mascot to a humanoid potato before the current NFL season concludes. This comes as a surprise to many fans and opposers of the current team mascot, due to Snyder’s previous statements concerning the team’s current name potentially being offensive to people of Native American heritage. In 2013, Snyder wrote a deeply felt letter to fans of the team explaining that the team name would never change because of the pride, longstanding history, and tradition that the team has. In the press conference he explained his reasoning behind the decision.

First things first: Wisconsin’s offense needs to get on the same page, the special teams need to fix whatever happened on that punt, the defense needs to stop waiting until their opponent is beyond midfield to start making stops, the mistakes and penalties need to be cut down and Jonathan Taylor needs to be a serious Heisman candidate.

For the first 15 minutes of their 17-9 win over the Purdue Boilermakers (1-2 Big Ten, 3-3 overall), the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (3-0, 6-0) played like an undefeated powerhouse rolling over the rest of their conference opponents.

On a gloomy Saturday afternoon, more than half of Wisconsin’s student section was still filing into Camp Randall Stadium as freshman running back Jonathan Taylor and the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers (3-0 Big Ten, 6-0 overall) opened the floodgates on the Purdue Boilermakers (1-2 Big Ten, 3-3).

The numbers didn’t lie last Saturday night when the Badgers rushed for 353 yards en route to a 38-17 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. At one point, UW rushed on 22 straight plays, which included a 10-play, 80-yard march down the field that finally put Nebraska to bed late in the fourth quarter. The passing game wasn’t too shabby either, but there wasn’t much pressure on quarterback Alex Hornibrook to make plays with his arm all night thanks to the rushing attack. The leader of that rushing attack, true freshman Jonathan Taylor, ran for an eye-popping 249 yards on 25 carries. He punched in two touchdowns as well, pacing the game for the Badgers all night long. There is no other player that made as large of an impact on the game as Taylor, and he was easily Wisconsin’s most valuable player against the Cornhuskers.

When Purdue walks through the tunnel on to the field at Camp Randall Stadium, a lot of eyes will gravitate towards one player: Junior running back Markell Jones. In his second game back from injury, Jones will be looking to prove his doubters wrong and get right back on track by improving numbers.

Wisconsin’s conference schedule grind continues this week as they take on the Purdue Boilermakers (1-1 Big Ten, 3-2 overall) at home. Purdue comes in having beaten Ohio, Missouri and Minnesota and dropping games to Louisville and Michigan. The rebuilding Boilermakers and new coach Jeff Brohm should be hungry for another Big Ten win and a signature victory in Madison. Here are three things each team should focus on if they want to win.

Once a moderately successful program known for upsetting top-ranked opponents and producing NFL quarterbacks, Purdue football seems to have lost its way in the last few years.

Week six of college football was like a buffet as it had a little bit of everything, blowouts, a seven overtime game, upsets and heart pounding last minute drives to decide games. Now that the majority of the Power Five conferences are well entrenched into their conference schedules, upsets were imminent. Here are some recaps of some of the most anticipated and most surprising games from last week.

Week six of Big Ten football season was filled with action as the Wisconsin Badgers broke away from the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the road to win, 38-17. In other news, Iowa’s big second half downed Illinois, 45-16. No. 10 Ohio State dominated Maryland, 62-14 and No. 4 Penn State throttled Northwestern on the road 31-7. Here is a more in-depth look at a few of the more exciting Big Ten games of the week.

Andre Taylor was known as “Bigg Dogg,” and he called everybody he knew Bigg Dogg. Not everybody, though, was a Bigg Dogg.

Alex Hornibrook is not the same quarterback he was a year ago.

Another week, another second-half surge by the Badgers. A dominant run game and a characteristically strong defense in the second half erased the memories of a generally dismal first 30 minutes and sent UW to its first 5-0 start since 2011. It’s tough to nitpick after a 21-point win on the road in a tough environment that broke Nebraska’s night game winning streak at 20, but there’s still a good deal to improve upon.

The No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 5-0 overall) are known as a slow-and-steady to win the race kind of team, but they needed a little bit more hare than tortoise in their 38-17 win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-1, 3-3).

Wisconsin continues its run through the Big Ten conference schedule this week as it hits the road to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0 Big Ten, 3-2 overall). Nebraska, thus far, has defeated Arkansas State, Rutgers and Illinois, while losing to Oregon and Northern Illinois. The NIU loss was its first loss to a non-Power-5 conference school since 2004. The Cornhuskers may be off to a disappointing start, but they will surely bring their A-game at home under the lights against the Badgers. Here are 3 things each team should focus on if they want to win.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers come into this game sitting at 3-2 overall, and 2-0 in Big Ten play, giving them a share for first place in the West division. However, those numbers somewhat mask the season Nebraska is having this year. The Cornhuskers began the year losing two of their first three games, and looked pitiful in the process. The school fired its athletic director after the second loss of the season, telling reporters that the football program has not been competitive enough since he had taken over in 2012. That puts Nebraska’s head coach, Mike Riley, squarely on the hottest seat in college football. Since then, the team has won its last two games, both against Big Ten teams. But Nebraska’s problems are far from solved, and the team is still searching for answers five games into the season.

A week after close calls among playoff contenders, college football revealed its truly elite teams. Some teams ended up dropping crucial games while others proved they are deserving of their high rankings. Yet, week five further solidified that the top two teams in the country, Alabama and Clemson, are clearly college football’s two front-runners while the rest of the top ten is still chasing last year’s National Championship teams. Here is a look at a few of the key games from this past weekend:

No doubt things would have been different last Saturday had Wisconsin’s defensive line not picked up the slack during its sluggish first half against Northwestern. No. 9 Wisconsin, having trailed the Wildcats 10-7 at the half, seemed to have no apparent momentum available to carry it into the second half of the game. However, while the offense seemed out of sorts, the defense was anything but. Wisconsin’s defensive line made some big time plays, holding the Wildcats to only 25 rushing yards, putting major pressure on Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson and, in turn, leaving the Wildcats without any room to run the ball. Wisconsin’s defense shined bright again on Saturday with six Badgers accounting for eight sacks during the game — the highest total since 2001.
