Science outreach figures are practically heroes in a time when the president has given the finger to the Paris Agreement and the Flat Earth Society is gaining traction on social media. However, these icons of logic are not experts in every conceivable area, and I caution against taking their word as gospel, even if they’re these people:

Who would have ever thought that the President of the United States and the National Football League would be butting heads. It’s absolutely incredible what has happened in sports this past weekend. You scroll through Twitter seeing endless videos of football players, coaches and general managers joining in on the #TakeAKnee movement. Are they wrong? Or are they right?

One of the rising problems regarding drug abuse is the misuse of opioids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states in its 2015 report that death rates for synthetic opioids from 2014-2015 increased 72.2 percent. The noticeable increase in adverse effects raises several questions: What are opioids? Why are they problematic? And most importantly, what can we do to help people cope with the problem?

For many university hopefuls from the state of Wisconsin, UW-Madison is a top choice. It seems diverse, inclusive, and “woke” with social issues. Now that we are on campus, we know this perception is far from true.

In late July, President Trump along with Gov. Scott Walker and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan announced the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn’s plan to build a flat-panel display screen factory in southeastern Wisconsin. The President boasted that the company would bring a potential 13,000 jobs to the area and it was a sign that the world once again believed in American manufacturing. While a $10 billion investment from the world’s tenth-largest employer makes a nice headline, a further reading of the deal reveals that it is not as good as it seems.

If your college application process was anything like ours, getting accepted into UW-Madison meant blasting Jump Around at full volume and committing as soon as possible. Upon signing that contract, we all became Badgers. Madison became our home, and our hearts began to skip beats at the thought of move-in day.

Two sexual assaults reported at UW-Madison ended in injustice this month. Nathan Friar will serve eight years of probation for a second-degree sexual assault he was convicted of, and no jail time. Nicholas Ralston was found not guilty of third-degree sexual assault, despite sending a text stating, “...I sexually assaulted [the victim] last night…”

On May 22, an Ariana Grande concert was attacked by a suicide bomber and 22 innocent people lost their lives. The victims ranged in age from eight years old to 51 years old. Shortly after the attack, ISIS claimed it as a work of the caliphate. The atrocity and brutality of the attack resonated worldwide.
