I have been wondering why Lisa Wade wrote an editorial on 'male genital mutilation' ('Male genital mutilation inexcusable,' Oct. 19-21). That may have been the most unnecessary piece of writing I have ever read. As a human sexuality TA, Ms. Wade should know that there are physiological differences between a penis and a vagina. I am baffled as to why she equates male circumcision, the removal of the prepuce, with female genital mutilation, the partial or complete removal of the clitoris and labia minora. Because FGM permanently robs women of the pleasures of sexual intercourse, it has become a human rights issue taken up by Amnesty International, the World Health Organization and the United Nations. But woman-parts and man-parts are not the same.  

Council adds Jarrell to Peace Park committee

The Elizabeth Link Peace Park Advisory Committee jumped through its last administrative hoop in its pursuit of official standing Tuesday when it received unanimous support from the Common Council, but not before the committee's makeup was altered to include Ald. Todd Jarrell, District 8. 

City Council OKs redistricting plan

The Madison Common Council unanimously approved a redistricting plan for aldermanic districts Tuesday that will take effect for the spring 2003 Common Council elections.

More work necessary to establish tenants' rights

For most UW-Madison students, an apartment near campus represents a first foray into the world of renting. For almost as many students, this first renting experience inevitably leads to the conclusion that landlords are inherently slow to repair leaks and light fixtures, but operate swiftly when it comes to collecting rent and requiring a decision on lease renewal. For years, landlords could force new tenants to decide as early as move-in day whether to renew their lease, before even the first class of the semester began.

ASM colleagues face off in District 5 City Council race

The race for the District 5 Madison Common Council seat officially got underway Wednesday, as UW-Madison sophomore and ASM member Jessy Tolkan announced the start of her campaign to a small gathering in the lobby of Chadbourne Residential College, 420 N. Park St.
