The University of Wisconsin System President Jay Rothman announced a new social media campaign to encourage students to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) last month. This initiative follows the announcement of the Wisconsin Tuition Promise which lists filing for FAFSA as a preliminary eligibility requirement.

The Wisconsin volleyball team began their three-game away series by facing Indiana on Wednesday, Oct. 5. They swept the Hoosiers, winning 25-23, 25-18 and 25-19. Sarah Franklin had a match-high 13 kills, followed by Danielle Hart who totaled 10. Wisconsin out-blocked Indiana 13-4 and grabbed their 14th-straight match win against the Hoosiers.

Wisconsin (0-2-0, 0-2-0 Big Ten) traveled to Columbus with hopes of taking down No. 14 Ohio State (4-0-0, 2-0-0) and beginning their young season in the win column. By Saturday afternoon, they were boarding the buses back to Madison with heavy hearts.

It was business as usual at the Wisconsin State Capitol on Oct. 4 when Gov. Evers called a session to discuss adding an amendment to Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban. What makes this a typical day isn’t necessarily the topic — rather, it’s the fact that only one Republican and three Democratic senators were present. The special session lasted 15 seconds — long enough to gavel in, rip to the next day in the senate chamber’s “365 chunky animals” calendar and adjourn.

B-Side Records is the only record shop left in downtown Madison. However, development company JD McCormick proposed demolishing three buildings to make room for a five-story development on the 400 block on State Street. JD McCormick’s proposed project will displace three small State Street businesses which have been there for decades, including B-Side Records, which resided at 416 State Street.

Wisconsin returned to the Field House for their third conference game on Friday night to face No. 9 Penn State. Penn State entered with an overall record of 12-1 and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin, ranked 12th in the nation, was also 1-1 in the Big Ten conference and was 7-3 overall.

The Wisconsin Badgers faced the Lakehead Thunderwolves in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon. The game provided a first look at the rebuilding Badger lineup. Despite the Badgers seemingly controlling play throughout much of the game, Wisconsin fell late in overtime, 3-2.

After their first two conference matches, the Badger women are back at the UW Fieldhouse to face their next two Big Ten opponents. No. 8 Wisconsin (7-3) will face the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions (12-1) on Friday and the Illinois Fighting Illini (7-5) on Sunday.

In a move that reflected growing momentum on campus, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s student council introduced legislation Wednesday to increase the wages of all student worker positions to $15 an hour. The introduction of this legislation is in response to the Wisconsin Union and UW Housing & Dining increasing their minimum wage to $15 an hour in late August.
