I’m trying to get my roommate to understand the size of the global black market. Earlier this week, my sociology professor had the class discussing how widespread black market activities were. Some of the students couldn’t believe that the US has one of the largest black markets in the world.

On Jan. 29, Daniel Hernandez — known by his stage name, Tekashi 6ix9ine (pronounced “six-nine”) — posted a celebratory video on his Instagram. The post announced his debut mixtape, DAY69, out Feb. 23, as he recapped his achievements in 2017 with his daughter by his side. 6ix9ine was positive in his message, telling artists of all forms to follow their dreams against whatever criticism may follow. However, further investigation of 6ix9ine’s life and music will reveal there is little to be happy about. If what 6ix9ine is speaking is the truth, the release of his full-fledged mixtape will represent a very troublesome step forward for an up-and-coming artist and other rappers of his generation, all of whom are detrimental to both hip-hop and society as a whole.

While I was at home in New Jersey for the holidays, my parents decided to reveal the fact that my grandpa was having a biopsy done. He had apparently found some suspiciously discolored skin, which his doctor suggested might be the result of melanoma. The whole family was surprised because nobody has a history of cancer. He spent many years habitually smoking cigarettes when he was younger.

I’m a college senior graduating this coming May with a degree in anthropology. I don’t have a job lined up quite yet but I’m not too worried. My biggest concern is my health. I hate to admit it, but the last couple of years have been tough on my body.

I could use some advice from someone knowledgeable about the different pros and cons associated with smoking marijuana. I have a friend back home in Colorado who’s prone to asthma attacks whenever she drinks alcohol. She’s already fairly introverted, so half of the events she attends make her anxious, especially if other people are drinking around her.

Three Madison city commissions, joined by Mayor Paul Soglin, will meet Tuesday to decide what to do about two Confederate monuments at Forest Hill Cemetery that have drawn criticism and dispute.

I could desperately use some help. My boyfriend’s birthday is soon approaching, and I don’t have any decent gift ideas yet. His present last year was a Lego Collector’s Edition of the Millenium Falcon, which he loved. Deciding to get that was easy, because he’d lost his mind over it when we visited Legoland last year.

My dad recently turned fifty, which was a big deal. My mom spared no expense when it came to the celebrations. Friends and family really enjoyed the festivities, and I was no exception. We planned different activities throughout the whole day, and I could tell that my dad was thrilled about everything.

I could use some help figuring out my options after graduation. I’m a college senior preparing to walk this May. I’ll be graduating with a degree in psychology. I’ve been exploring possible career opportunities but find that the task is pretty discouraging. Despite my major, I really don’t want to go into psychology or psychiatry.

I could use some real advice. My roommate has an older brother in New Jersey who’s had a pretty rough time after dropping out of college. She said he quit to join a business venture with an old high school friend. They were only about four months into it when he decided he didn’t want to do it anymore.

I could use a second opinion. My big brother is a private contractor for a security firm in Dallas. He got the job a few weeks after returning home and being discharged from the Marines. The whole family was relieved when his tour of duty concluded. We expected that he’d be out of harm's way one he settled back into civilian life, but that hasn’t been the case.

UW-Madison student Kenneth Cole launched his freshman project The Audacity under pen name K. Sankofa. With a runtime of around one hour, the mixtape is an energized yet eerily peaceful slew of soulful melodies and meaningful rap. Its central themes revolve around spirituality, family ties, institutional racism and the shortcomings of lackluster UW-Madison policy.

We all have that one relative: the scruffy-looking type who keeps to themselves at family gatherings and clearly doesn’t want to be there. His hair wild, eyes lowered, Destroyer’s frontman Dan Bejar appeared to headline the second night of the annual FRZN Fest embodying this character. He took frequent sips of his beer as he crooned lyrics that sounded like poetry but felt like the deep prophecies an uncle absentmindedly drones on about at the dinner table.

I love my life here on campus. I’m also very committed to succeeding in school. When I left for college, my Dad told me an old joke: “Sleep, studies, social life—pick two.” Well, that seems pretty accurate to me: I can’t sleep.

The 75th Golden Globe Awards on NBC Sunday night was the first major awards ceremony to be held since the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment accusations were revealed. Before the show even began, stars appeared on the red carpet draped in all black to support the Time’s Up organization. Powered by women, Time's Up addresses the systemic inequality and injustice in the workplace, especially regarding sexual harassment, assault and inequity. Eight actresses — including Amy Poehler, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Emma Watson — were accompanied by activists in various fields, from sports to immigration to preventing sexual violence against farmworkers. This was done in hopes of shifting the public’s attention from abusers to survivors and lasting solutions. The sea of black on the red carpet cast a somber, yet striking shadow on the evening and resonated throughout the ceremony.
