A great number of things have been going incredibly wrong
lately. It seems as if you can pretty much take your pick of
political, social and economic topics and find glaring faults
within any one of them; problems numerous enough to give fits of
consternation and depression to even the most optimistic among us.
The Washington echo chamber is up to the same old game using the
same old players. The entrenched Democratic old guard is trying to
flex their collective muscles and strong-arm an unwilling president
who would prefer to play a different game. The decimated Republican
old guard is hawking tired party lines and ideologies; looking
left, right, north and south for fresh relief. Nothing is
happening, nothing is changing. Meanwhile, the blue and red
hamsters continue to run contently inside their wheels.

Late Wednesday night, the Dallas Cowboys cut ties with wide
receiver Terrell Owens. This signaled the end of Owens' three-year
career with the Cowboys and another failed experiment with the
controversial player. But more importantly, the Cowboys sent a
strong and valuable message to the rest of the league: To be a
successful team, you not only need to have a dynamic chemistry on
the field, but off the field as well.

A trip to East Lansing, Mich., last weekend to cover the UW
men's basketball team allowed me to witness an excellent gameday
atmosphere. The Breslin Student Events Center is a unique
environment, an older building with a rich tradition of basketball.
But what impressed me the most about the experience was the setup
and character of Michigan State's student section, the Izzone. UW's
Grateful Red would benefit if the UW athletic department
incorporated alternative policies from Michigan State and other
universities.

Local band Love Rhombus feature three fun-loving, neon-sporting
20-somethings who use their music to express the sheer joy of
letting loose, with a bit of a geometry lesson thrown in. Just
watch their music video for Frostbite Heart,"" and you'll witness
catchy layers of electronic beats paired with simple, rhythmic
synthesizers, bass and guitar. This usually results in a vibrant
wall of sound powerful enough to provoke spontaneous dancing from
even the most incorrigible of friends. Add in the earnest lyrics of
Madeleine Fairbairn, and ""Frostbite Heart"" becomes a more than
auspicious single.

From the film's first scenes in Berlin, director Tom Tykwer
(Run, Lola, Run"") takes audiences across the globe from
Luxembourg, to Italy, to Istanbul and, of course, eventually to
Manhattan. These grand settings immediately give meaning to the
title by taking audiences on a tour of the beautiful scenery that
includes the stars of the film, the short-tempered foreigner Clive
Owen and the innocent Naomi Watts.

On Dec. 31, 2002, the Dow Jones Industrial sat at 8,341. The
Index had experienced its first three-year loss since 1939-41. The
next five years saw unprecedented growth. On Oct. 9, 2007, the Dow
experienced an all-time high of 14,161. During that time,
approximately $149 billion were paid out in bonuses to workers in
the securities industries. In 2007, the average CEO pay was $14.2
million, almost 400 times the pay of the average American worker.
Research by Andrew Sum of Northeastern University's Center for
Market Labor Studies found that from 2000 to 2006, 93 million
American workers - all production and non-supervisory workers as
defined by the government - had real earnings increases of less
than half of the combined bonuses awarded by the top Wall Street
firms for just one year.

As I begin the final semester of my five years here at
UW-Madison, I have been hit with a wave of nostalgia. The past five
years have been instrumental in the formation of the person I am
today. I have many memories here in Madison, and I feel that I am
ready to move on. But there is one feeling that I do not want to
have in the future: regret.

I awoke Monday thinking it was going to be like most Mondays. I

wanted. I had went to bed thre previous night reading The
Alchemist,"" a book by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, and tried to

legends.
