I’m a music history buff, or a music history nerd if you prefer. There’s an allure to learning about past musical events that make you wish you were there when they occurred. The experience of seeing The Ramones or Talking Heads play CBGBs, or experiencing the Belleville Three spin Techno in Detroit in the 80s, would be amazing to witness as both events shaped their respective genres. However, we view those events as important in hindsight. We now know that the Ramones proved that Rock doesn’t need fancy guitar licks and long tracks to have power. And we now know that the Belleville Three helped shape EDM into the powerhouse it is today.

The big game of the weekend was Wisconsin’s 23-17 overtime win over Nebraska at Camp Randall Stadium, knocking the Cornhuskers from the ranks of the unbeaten and shaking up the race for the Big Ten West. Other than that, it was a fairly ho-hum weekend in the Big Ten. As such, there are no changes in positioning in this week’s power rankings.

If you are craving a binge resonant to the film “Crazy, Stupid, Love” but without the originality, wit or charm, Netflix’s new series “Easy” is the show for you. “Easy” succeeds in depicting real relationships, yet fails at offering a reason for us to care. The anthology-style series was quietly released September 22 and it seems to have already faded away. After watching the eight half-hour episodes in the style of separately packaged short films, I did not feel satisfied in the least. I was excited to explore a show that had the potential of offering a commentary on the complexity of modern dating, yet it floundered its chance with tangential misdirection and shallow material.

I have to admit, when Donald Trump announced he was running for president, I was a bit intrigued by his candidacy. In an otherwise large and homogenous field, Trump offered the opportunity for our party to evolve. His willingness to break form with establishment figures could’ve led to a Republican platform that was more in touch with our time and better equipped to attract young voters. But as we all know, this turned out to be a fantasy. Instead, his double entendres, and ambiguous romanticizations of the past have resulted in the regression of GOP policy and the substitution of divisive rhetoric for fiscal conservatism and constitutional rights.

‘Tis the season for Shondaland’s hit shows to return. “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder” began new seasons Sept.22, and it’s finally beginning to feel like fall. Shonda Rhimes, the primetime network queen, has created one successful show after another without jeopardizing quality. Her characters are always complex and real, her narration is always personal and clever and her series as a whole are always worthy to binge. Setting aside other shows by Rhimes, I would like to focus on her edgiest and wittiest show to date, “How to Get Away with Murder.”
