At a time when our political climate is as divided as ever, where a comedian’s routine at an otherwise unremarkable Washington, D.C. dinner can spark days longs wars between adversaries on social media, empathy is often in short supply.

It’s important to have recognition toward feminist writers as well as minority writers. This past year I took “English 173,” during which I had the opportunity to read “The Woman Warrior.” When I first heard the title, I had no idea what I was getting myself into or how it would open a whole new world of literature. Feminist literature is a form that gives voices to women who are traditionally suppressed or oppressed. “The Woman Warrior” is taught in many high school and college classes, serving as a contemporary classic which enforces the idea of feminist criticism that traditional patriarchal structure is not the only form a reader should view.

I own a small property in my hometown, thanks to the generosity of a departed relative. The problem is, I don’t really use it. I was thinking about renting it for a while, but I never really got off the dime and did the work it would take to do that (I don’t even really know how to do that). Now I’m thinking about selling it, but my parents clearly wish I wouldn’t. They think I should hold onto it as an investment. But what good is an investment if you can’t get money out of it? Experts, I’m not sure what to do. Can you give me some insight into how all this real estate investing stuff works?

I’m graduating this year, but I haven’t been able to land a job offer yet. I’m trying to remain optimistic, but I’m pretty worried that my liberal arts major won’t get me the type of job I want. I’m not sure what to do if I don’t get any kind of offer. I guess I could move back in with my parents or something, but I’m hoping to avoid that. However, if I’m not qualified for entry-level jobs, I feel like I don’t have many other options. What should I do?

I’m not a total luddite or anything, but I sometimes wish that I could go back in time. The modern world of online shopping, constant connection, and lack of privacy really gets to me. Sometimes I dream about going off and working on a farm, or running a mom-and-pop business, where technology wouldn’t be a part of my daily life. But then, I think that these sorts of jobs are in danger of being eliminated by technology, anyway, so maybe I’d worry about technology more than ever. Is there any way to escape the modern world? How can I live more simply?

Superheroes don’t always wear capes, or so the saying goes. Sometimes they blend into the black backdrop on a stage and cast their powers over a crowd through the vibrations of their guitar strings. Indie rock singer-songwriter Mitski radiated this power, her chin raised and legs placed firmly in a powerful stance, regal as she watched over her kingdom at the High Noon Saloon this past Thursday.

A few weeks ago, I got a letter from Tammy Baldwin’s 2018 reelection campaign. The mass-printed flyer outlined Baldwin’s progress in the Senate so far and her future goals; most of which I agreed with. To me, she seems like a fair candidate and it’s likely that she will get my vote.

In Chicago’s Vic Theatre, the room went dark and the crowd came alive. We knew what this meant — Hippo Campus was finally ready to perform, and we were more than ready to listen. Shades of blue lighting immediately hit the stage and outlined the band. Lead vocalist Jake Luppen let his voice pervade the room that had now fallen silent with suspense. His melodic tone carried the lyrics to the song “Poems” as the other band members let their instruments slowly seep into the rhythm. The beginning of “Poems” feels like a dream — unhurried and soothing. After a minute or so, however, all of the instruments come in at once to create this burst of euphoria. Although it was not clear to me at first, it now seems obvious why the band chose this song to open with. The initial dreamy feel and the knowledge that a vibrant chorus is seconds away generates this palpable, unmistakable electricity in the crowd that sets up the rest of the night for high spirits and success.
