At this point, after going to three of their shows in the past five months, seeing Porches is a ritual: Brush your teeth, go to work, do laundry, go see Porches. But unlike most rituals, no matter how many times I see them, the last thing Porches will ever be is mundane.

The big story of the weekend in the Big Ten was No. 11 Wisconsin’s merciless 30-6 beatdown of No. 8 Michigan State in East Lansing. Badgers fans everywhere are still trying to process the sight of a quarterback that can make big throws on third down. Elsewhere in the conference, Michigan obliterated Penn State, Nebraska escaped Evanston with a win, Indiana was the latest victim in Wake Forest’s inevitable national championship run and Purdue technically has a winning record as the calendar turns to October.

Sia has a way of making herself the canvas that lives in multiple frames. She’s become what the music industry has lost since the emergence of digital media, an artist who is willing to sacrifice the glam of fame for the appreciation of the art. “The Greatest” is Sia’s latest music release with a chilling message that has haunted America since June. It’s heavy and whole; viewers claim that it’s connected to the mass killing of 49 people at Pulse, an Orlando gay nightclub, that occurred this past June.

Last fall, I took the semester off due to increasingly serious depression. While I planned on doing something productive to help me recover, my days usually consisted of sleeping until 3 p.m., not getting out of bed until 5 p.m., drinking excessive amounts of pre-made iced coffee with added protein as if by being extra alert (read: anxious and jittery), I could make up for my oversleeping, and contemplating my myriad of problems until around 2 a.m., when I would drive to the 24-hour Woodman’s on the other side of town to replace my empty carton of iced coffee. Once at Woodman’s, I’d circle the whole store a few times with a cart containing two or three items, avoiding the gaze of the people stocking the shelves while wondering what they thought of me. And of course, being the self-absorbed writer-type, I spent much of the time thinking about how I would turn this experience into a story (this isn’t it). I’d imagine myself telling the story, but also telling people about imagining myself telling the story, until there was an endless regress of telling and imagining. Self-awareness is in, I thought.

Summer is at an end, school has just begun and Madison students are finally beginning to wake from what I call the “Summer Netflix Coma.” This common, transmissible condition begins when students are finished with finals and face the sudden urge to drop everything, slip into a Snuggie and binge watch their favorite show that has been absent from their lives since the first round of exams hit. This summer’s contagion seems to be the breakout Netflix Original Series “Stranger Things.”

Starting 15 years ago, Americans have annually taken pause to recognize the tragic events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. The words “Never Forget 9/11” are often spoken and written, more frequently as summer turns to fall.

Despite all that classic college fun, and despite the fact that we all know how lucky we are to be in college receiving an education, let’s face it: College can be really hard. Sometimes you pull excruciating all-nighters locked in nasty library cages. Sometimes you stare blankly at a wall for an hour after being handed an intimidating syllabus. Sometimes you shed a tear or two in the Vilas bathroom. Sometimes you wake up on the floor next to your friend’s futon at 3 p.m. on a Thursday feeling more like a half-eaten raisin than a human being, surrounded by a sea of Gordon’s quesadillas that you don’t remember ordering.

Pulse. A name fitting for a club that wasn’t just known as one of the “hottest gay bars” in Miami, but also for a place that was at the heart of the LGBT community in Orlando, Florida. On Sunday, June 12, the rhythm of Pulse was broken. From what authorities have confirmed, Omar Mateen walked into Pulse nightclub at 2 a.m. and opened fire into the crowd killing 50 people and wounding at least 53. This tragedy has been labeled as one of the most tragic mass shootings in the history of the U.S. In the wake of this, we as the American people must understand something: We can’t use this instance of violence to perpetuate hate.
