It’s the most wonderful time of the year … right? For students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and colleges across the country, this isn’t always the case. The beginning of the holiday season does not only usher in gift exchanges, holiday movie marathons and jamming out to Mariah Carrey’s, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat. “The most wonderful time of the year” also marks the beginning of the most dreaded time of the year: finals season.

University of Wisconsin-Madison community members expressed concerns with a letter sent from Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly Robin Vos to Chancellor Rebecca Blank earlier this month accusing the university of “turning its back on the values of intellectual diversity” due to the inclusion of Critical Race Theory in the curriculum of a online prevention education course for graduate students.

For as long as I have been at this university, I have gotten a weekly email from the University Bookstore about something called “Geraldine’s Pick.” While the majority of these emails have gone over my head, I could not help but be intrigued by the consistency. I began to ask myself, “What is Geraldine’s Pick?” and “Who even is Geraldine?”

The University of Wisconsin-Madison saw its student-voter turnout for the 2020 presidential election rise to 72.8%, up from 65.4% in 2016. According to the Institute for Democracy & Higher Education (IDHE), UW-Madison’s voting rate was higher than the 66% rate of all other colleges.

From Gordons to State Street, Witte to the Hub, the way in which students view the University of Wisconsin-Madison is greatly impacted by the place in which they live. A naive freshman immediately feels overwhelmed by the immensity of this institution as they are swarmed by thousands of students walking from place to place. The community that is created by freshmen dorms allows for these intimidated individuals to make a large campus feel a little bit smaller.

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team is set to host the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 2 p.m. on Oct. 30. Despite the proximity between the two schools, this will be their first ever women’s basketball game, and it’s set to be a good one. From the new head coach entrance for the Badgers, Marisa Moseley, to the incredibly successful 2020-21 season for the Titans, the game will most definitely not disappoint.

Denis Villeneuve released “Dune” (2021) into a dizzying sandstorm of expectations. The star-studded cast promised recognizable, idolized personalities, such as Timotheé Chalamet and Zendaya. Author Frank Herbert established the franchise decades ago and posthumously left Villeneuve a dedicated, literary fanbase. Commentators, and the director himself, urged audiences to see the film in theaters, lest its cinematic artistry go unappreciated.
