You can get a burger pretty much anywhere. Fast food restaurants
thaw thousands of burgers a day-even Mexican restaurants are firing
up the grill. In a city where burgers are as commonplace as
panhandlers, what could make a new burger joint any different from
the rest?

Aside from the return of the time-honored songs at Camp Randall,
there was nothing to jump around for on the field, as the Badgers
lost to the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV 23-5 on a soggy Saturday
afternoon.

From the loneliness of a black screen, the voice of the
narrator, a present-day filmmaker, states, \I open my eyes and see
nothing."" Then, transitioning slowly as he continues to speak, the
narrator and the audience are borne into the snowy Russian world of
18th century St. Petersburg at the State Hermitage Museum. In the
midst of the snow, gentlemen-officers and their ladies arrive by
coach to a party being held inside the Hermitage, which holds
Russia's history and art from the past 300 years.

There were lots of memorable sports moments in 2002-'03, both on
and off the field. The Daily Cardinal takes a look at some of the
best (and worst).

The first time is the best time for Syracuse University. The
Orangemen (30-5) captured their first NCAA basketball crown ever,
on Monday night, defeating the Jayhawks of Kansas (30-8) 81-78.

For a movie-going week with three new wide-release openings,
this one isn't very appetizing. \A Man Apart"" appears to be lame
and clich??-ridden even for Vin Diesel, while, as my brother put
it, ""What a Girl Wants"" seems to be the touching story of a grown
man who learns to fall in love with his own teenage daughter. So
instead, I decided this week to run the third leg of this
semester's Colin Farrell Triple Crown. While ""Phone Booth"" may
have left me still wanting to see Farrell in something a little
more substantive, it easily transcends the level of ""The Recruit""
and ""Daredevil,"" which were awful movies that strictly offered a
taste of Farrell's talent.

The Kohl Center event staff standing in front of the Wisconsin
student section began to get a little nervous during Wednesday
night's game between UW and Illinois.

The 1991 Gulf War was so successful because countries throughout
the Middle East lent their institutional support to the
international coalition organized by the elder George Bush. A war
can't be conducted simply from aircraft carriers; an army needs a
host country. President Bush had been unable to find any similar
sort of support, but the Turkish prime minister had agreed. The
U.S. Defense Department was all raring to get to Iraq, when the
Turkish Parliament threw a surprise monkey wrench into things. In a
stunning backbench revolt, they narrowly defeated serving as our
host country.

They watched as their lead evaporated from 13 points with 4:06
remaining in the first half, to two with 11:15 left in the second.
They saw Minnesota sophomore forward Rick Rickert catch fire from
the field in the second half, with the big man scoring 13 points on
a stunning array of shots. They heard the record crowd of 14,907
grow louder with each improbable Minnesota three-pointer until the
Barn shook from its cheers.

Fiscal Responsibility? The one thing that I found most
remarkable about the federal budget is that this otherwise
stereotypically conservative administration has proposed a budget
that makes no pretenses about the fact it will create a
record-breaking budget deficit--which will be north of $300 billion
by its own estimate.

The Golden Globes were handed out last Sunday. This year's crop
of winners offered an interesting mix of buzz coming true and bold
wisdom on the part of the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Senior quarterback Brooks Bollinger never dazzled anyone. His
numbers were good, but not great. His arm was not as strong or as
accurate as many of his counterparts. He even spent a large part of
his career as the second most-popular quarterback on the team--at
least in the eyes of the student section. Despite all this,
Bollinger leaves with three bowl victories under his belt and 30
wins; the most ever for a UW quarterback. The Daily Cardinal pays
tribute to Bollinger's career with a look at his top five
games.

As we head toward Nov. 5, Election Day, Democrats nationwide
look ready for a good night. Challengers for Senate are poised to
win in three states with outside shots elsewhere, while the
stunning and tragic developments in Minnesota will probably end in
the return of former Vice President Walter Mondale to the Senate.
Democrats will probably have at least a one seat net gain in the
Senate, possibly as high as three seats. The House of
Representatives will likely remain in Republican hands with little
movement, though, as redistricting was so partisan across the
country that the current makeup of the chamber has been almost
frozen in place.

It all started two weeks ago Sunday, when the new restaurant
Chipotle, 658 State St., opened its doors to a multitude of
burrito-hungry consumers. Since then, burrito lovers are having a
tough time deciding just where to satisfy their pallets. Many are
wondering where the idea of hands-on gourmet Mexican eating
originated.
