Wisconsin prides itself as being an environmentally friendly
state, with citizens who enjoy and respect their natural
surroundings. In fact, Wisconsin's own former governor and senator
Gaylord Nelson organized the first Earth Day events in 1970.
Recognized as both a great politician, and an exceptional steward
of the land, Sen. Nelson embodies the Wisconsin environmental
ideology. However, an increasing amount of anti-environmental
legislation by both the federal and state government necessitate
that Earth Day be used as a day to highlight recent environmental
rollbacks and re-energize ourselves as Wisconsin citizens around
the issues that affect our air, our water, and our land.

The Major League Baseball Players Association is killing the
game of baseball. Instead of trying to better the game, they are
greedily trying to defeat the owners on every issue at the
bargaining table, regardless of whether it makes baseball as a
whole better or worse.

In \Rumble, Young Man, Rumble,"" Benjamin Cavell writes about
men who, as boys, might just do things like kill a stray cat for no
better reason than to see how it makes them feel.

For one night, the Madison music community came together in a
symphony of thanks, cooperation and support. The first Madison Area
Music Awards honored the city's best and most creative Sunday night
at the Orpheum Theatre, 216 State St.

One of the best things about this campus is the stunning amount
of creativity that pulses through it. Thousands of brilliant and
colorful minds (OK, and maybe a few people who are just plain lucky
with multiple choice tests) converge here in Madison, and as a
result we have some of the wackiest traditions, most interesting
projects and discoveries in the world. But this begs the
question-what is art, and what is simply proof that some people
have way too much free time on their hands?

The Wisconsin women's hockey team (16-5-1 Western Collegiate
Hockey Association, 22-5-3 overall) ensured themselves at least a
second-place finish in the WCHA after a series sweep of Ohio State
last weekend. The Badgers dominated the Buckeyes, outscoring them
13-3 in the two games.

Pattern surrounds us, from striped wallpaper to the rows of
books on bookshelves. The underlying concept behind pattern is
repetition-repetition is key to understanding a pattern when we see
it. \Repeat, Repeat,"" showing through March 8 at the Gallery of
Design, exhibits four artists who use pattern to explore concepts
and process in their work. As part of the School of Human Ecology
Centennial Year exhibition series, ""Repeat, Repeat"" relies on the
viewer's knowledge of pattern as connected to the world of textiles
and interiors in order to come across as a coherent body of work.

Whether the characters were talking about elevensies, how to
cook rabbits or why salted pork is a delicacy, it seems somewhat
odd that an epic gives screen time to eating. While Peter Jackson

\Welcome to Mooseport"" is merely mildly amusing when it very
well could have been uproarious. Although the film depends on the
mismatch between Gene Hackman's dignity and Ray Romano's charm,
there is not much else here. Those two characters take the movie as
far as it can go but are drowned out by too many secondary
performers who are little more than annoying voices or
buffoons.

Three short days away from Valentine's Day. Perhaps one of the
most difficult holidays to \celebrate""-single people hate it and
guys in a relationship fear it due to the dangerous possibility of
screwing up. The time-tested and approved Valentine's Day excursion
includes dinner and a movie, but renting the wrong movie (say,
""Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"") can put an end to what may have
been a wonderful evening. Here are three great films for a romantic
evening.

For most college students, the word \childhood"" will probably
evoke memories of Barbies, Legos and four-square. While we all
easily remember that childhood, it might be more difficult to
pinpoint that certain moment in time that causes us to leave behind
that carefree, uncomplicated life forever. ??

Looking back at the films of 2003, it's hard to believe just how
many films have been released in one short year. It would be quite
easy to wrap up the year with a \best of"" list that would probably
include the two biggest box-office hits of the summer (""Finding
Nemo"" and ""Pirates of the Caribbean""), but instead I want to
touch on three films that I felt were surprisingly great and
unappreciated by the general film audience.

I have always been wary of measures designed to get tough on
crime, especially mandatory minimum sentences and three strike
laws. These laws destroy judicial discretion and punish individuals
based on history instead of on their accused crime. We should not
be surprised that the United States leads the world in
incarceration rate, with 686 out of 100,000 Americans in prison.
Draconian drug laws have also played a large role in creating a
society where approximately 2 million people are in jail.

I have learned entirely too much chemistry as an undergraduate

my perpetual lack of money I could draw only one conclusion-it was
time to brew my own alcohol.
