If any of you have ever taken Intro to Production, you know that
this is the time of the semester when everybody is scrambling to
finish (or maybe even start) their final projects. I am currently
in the class, struggling to make the best movie I can with only
five dollars and a couple friends.

Halloween might be over, but it is always the right time for a
downright creepy first person shooter. Monolith Soft, the team
behind the FPS genre classic 'No One Lives Forever,' has just
released 'F.E.A.R.,' a shooter nearly as scary as it is stunning.

'2046,' the latest film from Chinese author Wong Kar-Wai, is
intricately woven, gorgeously filmed, and innovatively structured.
Unfortunately, it leads its audience not to care about anything
happening onscreen. Worse yet, this film could have been brilliant
had Kar-Wai not prevented a little thing called 'humanity' from
even making a guest appearance in this oftentimes suffocating
intellectual endeavor.

Battle scenes are the bread and butter of a typical war film,
lending gritty authenticity as well as differentiating it from
similar films. Compare and contrast the chaotic jungle combat of
'Platoon' with the thoroughly unsettling Russian roulette sequences
in 'The Deer Hunter' or the sweeping, Wagner-scored helicopter raid
in 'Apocalypse Now' to see how differently Vietnam was interpreted
by three maverick directors.

Following up 'Age of Empires II: Age of Kings''a game that
effectively set a new benchmark for the real-time strategy
genre'posed a tremendous challenge for Ensemble Studios. 'Age of
Mythology' was a highly successful diversion for the series, but
fans of the 'Empires' series have had to wait six years for
Ensemble to finally release 'Age of Empires III.'

Usually the words 'inspired by a true story' send shivers up
movie-goers' spines. Most films sporting that infamous tag either
take too many liberties with their source material and lose the
reality of the story ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose') or feel the
urge to turn a simple narrative into what they hope will be the
inspirational story to end all inspirational stories (Keanu Reeves'
'Hardball' and any number of biopics). 'North Country' prefers to
rely on the strength of its superb acting talent to tell a story of
strength and survival.

There's nothing quite like a good zombie game to get in the
Halloween spirit. Most zombie games pit you as the human action
hero, armed with weapons galore on your quest to save the world
from zombification. While blowing up those lumbering brain-eaters
in a myriad of gruesome ways is a blast, that scenario has gotten
stale.

For any diehard college football fan, waking up on a crisp fall
Saturday produces a feeling comparable only to a kid running down
the stairs early on Christmas morning. All those games, perfectly
wrapped up and delivered by ESPN, ABC and CBS, are just waiting to
be watched by their grateful recipients. While everyone's favorite
is their alma mater's game, all the others can be enjoyed as well.
Some even surpass expectations and become the most
cherished.

At times last season, players on the Wisconsin football team
(2-1 Big Ten, 5-1 overall) sounded like brainwashed drones,
endlessly dispensing sound bites about how the team just needed to
\go 1-0 this week."" But after Saturday's defensive meltdown in
Evanston, during which the Badger defense surrendered nearly 700
yards and seven consecutive scoring drives to Northwestern in the
stunning 51-48 loss, head coach Barry Alvarez was spinning a far
more disturbing broken record.

EVANSTON, ILL.-As junior quarterback John Stocco's pass sailed
into the hands of Wildcat safety Reggie McPherson, the small number
of fans donning purple at Ryan Field in Evanston on Saturday could
let out a sigh of relief.

Within \American Farm"" resides the beauty of cooperation,
simplicity and hard work. The film, playing at the Orpheum Theatre,
216 State St., relays the tale of Contour Meadows, a
fifth-generation family farm in Richfield Springs, N. Y.

Regardless of whether you love or hate his style, Tim Burton
certainly knows how to make a unique movie. A true champion of the
bizarre, Burton's films range from the sympathetic \Edward
Scissorhands"" to the elaborate ""Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory,"" all united by his passion for misunderstood heroes and
differences between reality and fantasy.

The use of piano in rock music has consistently held a steady
following, especially with the likes of Billy Joel pushing the
form. In recent years, bands such as Keane, Ben Folds Five, Maroon
5 and Coldplay have come to dominate the airwaves and iPods with
their piano-infused songs of widely varying rock caliber.

After Friday night's devastating 2-1 double overtime loss to
Brigham Young, Wisconsin head coach Dean Duerst stressed the need
to get off to a quick start Saturday, and for one of his younger
players to step up.

When dolphins are flipping, twisting and leaping into the sky
for the first several minutes of a movie, the production in
question must be a huge gamble or a huge joke. Fortunately, \The

Operation FALCON sounds like an episode of \Super Friends,"" but
was actually the title of a week long dragnet, organized by
Gonzales' Justice Department, carried out by state and local law
enforcement agencies, which recently netted 10,000 fugitives
nationwide. Here in Madison, the police have been making headlines
in other ways-namely the Mifflin Street Block Party scheduling
screw-up recently resolved. So, with friendly gendarmes making such
headlines near and far, it might be interesting to consider a
related phenomenon: the police presence, in terms of gross numbers
and power, in the United States today.
