If you stand very close to me, you might notice a small scar in
front of my right ear. The scar is from surgery I underwent when I
was seven. After a long series of tests, a mysterious bump turned
out to be nothing serious, and a short procedure was required to
remove it. Ever since, there have been no after-effects other than
the scar.

Freshman forward Ryan Suter smashed the blade of his stick on
the ice. Unhappy with the outcome, he smashed it again, this time a
little harder. This time it broke. The stick still in one piece, he
was still not satisfied. To cap things off he snapped it in half
over his knee.

In \Jersey Girl,"" writer/director Kevin Smith dives into more
serious territory after producing such films as ""Clerks"" and
""Mallrats."" ""Jersey Girl"" is not truly a serious movie, but it
is much more serious than his earlier films in terms of character,
plot and emotion. Although his decision to move forward is
admirable, ""Jersey Girl"" itself is far from being an admirable
film, most of which is because of Smith's unfamiliarity directing
more serious material.

Here in this fine swing state, we get to view most of the feisty
television ads from presidential candidates George Bush and John
Kerry. With the debate reaching such intensity so early in the
race, it seems like 30-second spots won't be able to contain it for
long-it's only a matter of time before the candidates start
branching out within the medium.

What a treat to have a new Robert Altman movie gracing the big
screen. \The Company,"" which is currently playing at Westgate
Cinema, is a hugely entertaining fictional look behind the scenes
at the Joffrey Ballet Company.??The idea to make the movie came
from Neve Campbell, who stars and is one of the
producers.??Campbell said in interviews that her first love was
ballet, and she turned to acting only after injuries sidelined her
career as a dancer. This is a movie she has been trying to make for
the last few years.

My job as a journalist would be much easier if I could just make
up stories and pass them off as true. That would never work,
though, because I'm not a very good liar.

I tried not to fall for it. Lou, I said, don't fall for it. (I
call myself Lou because internal dialogue is all about efficiency.)
You'll only end up getting hurt, I said. I should have listened to
myself. But no. I just kept right on thinking, \Spring is here."" I
stopped wearing gloves or a hat. I even looked at a few flower beds
for bulb shoots.

Though Sunday's women's basketball game between Wisconsin (2-5
Big Ten, 8-9 overall) and Northwestern (0-8, 7-11) pitted the ninth
and 11th placed teams in the Big Ten, one would not have guessed it
from the fine quality of hoops action that was on display. The
Badgers were able to secure a 69-53 win, just their second
conference victory, in front of High School/Alumni Day crowd of
7,324. While Wisconsin snapped a two-game losing streak, the loss
sent Northwestern to their seventh successive defeat.

It was a tale of two lines in the Music City Bowl, the porous
offensive line of the Wisconsin Badgers (7-6 overall) and the
powerful defensive line of the Auburn Tigers (8-5). The Tigers'
ferocious pass rush clawed through UW's O-line all game long and
constantly pressured Jim Sorgi, sacking the senior quarterback five
times. The most costly of these quarterback crunches came with 2:37
left on the game clock. A crucial fumble ensued and Auburn
recovered the ball on the Wisconsin six-yard line, setting up
junior tailback Carnell Williams' game clinching touchdown??for AU.
Auburn finished with a total of six sacks on the day, including one
sack on??UW backup quarterback John Stocco in garbage time.

For the Wisconsin men's hockey team (8-3-5 Western Collegiate
Hockey Association, 14-5-5 overall), winter break was like a
month-long roller coaster ride. Unbeaten streaks survived long
enough to break records but were eventually ended, players left to
lead the United States to its first-ever World Junior Championship
victory, and when all was said and done the Badgers led the
WCHA.

The Badgers (4-3 Big Ten, 7-4 overall) will meet the Iowa
Hawkeyes (4-3, 8-3) Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium for the
conclusion of the 2003 regular season. Wisconsin has had its share
of struggles this season, but is coming off a victory which saw it
all but obliterate a previously ranked Spartans squad.

As the Big Ten season comes to a close this weekend and teams
get locked into December bowl games, there is little doubt the
effects of some of the most unlikely games could have an effect on
the standings. Whether losing to a conference bottom feeder or
beating the big guys, this year's Big Ten season had its share of
upset specials that made it one to watch.
