It is irrefutable that a high-concept film lives and dies by its
premise, no matter how proficiently executed or capably handled.
Most films that are so tenuously structured upon a risky idea
actually contain a theoretically sound concept. When they fail,
they managed to botch another aspect of the film. For example, it
wasn't the concept of Jim Carrey playing God that sealed \Bruce
Almighty's"" fate, but rather the revoltingly sappy script, which
was so awful you would think it was originally intended for Pauly
Shore or Carrot Top, coupled with the sloppy direction of Tom
Shadyac. However, Jonathan Glazer's ambitious ""Birth"" is a
superbly mounted, admirable production that would have succeeded
without question-if not for its ultimately fallible premise.

The Wisconsin women's soccer team extended their winning streak
to seven games last Saturday in a 2-0 win at home against Northern
Illinois closing out their regular season with a 15-4-1 record.
After Penn State snapped the Badgers' six-game winning streak to
open the season Sept. 17, it seemed unlikely they could eclipse
that streak by the end of their 20-game season, but they did just
that.

Entering Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers (5-0 Big Ten, 8-0
overall) were the most questioned undefeated team in the nation.
While they may retain that mantle in the eyes of national college
football gurus, the Badgers answered a lot of questions about
themselves Saturday with a 24-12 victory over the Northwestern
Wildcats (2-2, 3-4).

This weekend will decide it all for the Badgers (3-4-1 Big Ten,
9-4-1 overall), ranked No. 6 in the conference. They battle the No.
9 Big Ten team, Michigan State Spartans (2-5-1, 8-6-1) on Friday at
the McClimon Complex. The Spartans, who have a 2-5-1 record, are
looking to snap a four-game losing streak and even the score with
the Badgers.

Despite all the jokes and puzzlement surrounding the fact that
State Street is home to not just one, but two burrito joints;
despite the fact that Chipotle moved in one year ago a mere block
away from Qdoba; despite the fact that many students see both
places as corporate giants taking away from the unique character of
State Street-Moe's has somehow made it in.

The giant stag was no Bambi. It stood seven feet tall at the
shoulders and carried a spread of antlers 12 feet wide. It would
have been easy to spot in the cool woodlands of Ice Age Europe, but
perhaps hard to kill.

The conference season may already be two weeks underway, but
classic Big Ten football will rear its ancient head on Saturday
when the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 5-0 overall) head
into Columbus to clash with the No. 17 Ohio State Buckeyes (1-1 Big
Ten, 4-1 overall).

Anyone who contests that running backs in the UW football
program are no more than cogs in a well-oiled machine may want to
think twice before accepting such a notion as gospel. While
Wisconsin boasts one of the best offensive lines in the country,
the Badgers' ground attack arguably hinges entirely on senior
running back Anthony Davis' health and production.

Few people know that back in 1988, a young man by the name Ramon
Martinez was initially the pride of his family as the highly touted
pitching prospect who left the Dominican Republic to gain wealth
and prominence by playing in the big leagues-though maybe you are
more familiar with his younger brother, Pedro. Venus Williams tore
through her competition with reckless abandon early in her career
and was labeled the savior of tennis, only to lose her title to no
other than her pesky little sis, Serena. Even Michael Jackson had
remarkably talented older siblings and managed to outshine them
all.

Saturday saw two hallmark teams of the Big Ten play 60 minutes
of grind-it-out, tough-it-out-style football. UW, while not pretty
by any stretch of the imagination, brought back a sense of
nostalgia with a running back that weighed in at 270 pounds and a
defense that allowed Penn State only one third-down conversion in
13 attempts.

While many people may say that junior fullback Matt Bernstein
was the player of the game Saturday, there was one player who made
a bigger impact. Senior defensive end Erasmus James was a menace on
defense and was the most important player in the Badgers 16-3 win
over Penn State.

It took the Badgers three games and the wait of an entire
offseason, but Wisconsin Head Coach Barry Alvarez finally got his
100th win Saturday afternoon as the Badgers opened their 2004
season with a 34-6 victory over Central Florida.

In between momentum killers such as five minute delays to decide
where to place the ball or senior running back Anthony Davis'
injury that had all of the record-setting Camp Randall crowd
holding their collective breaths, the No. 21 Badgers put on a
pretty good game with minor mistakes and no career-threatening
injuries.

With the start of another semester and the accompanying influx
of fresh meat on campus, the religious zealots are out in force.
But for some reason, they're leaving me alone this year, and I
don't quite know how to feel about it.

After 10 straight seasons with Kevin Cosgrove calling the shots
on defense, the Badgers will have a new coach roaming the sidelines
this year. While he did a great job during his tenure at Wisconsin,
Cosgrove left room for improvement for incoming defensive
coordinator Bret Bielema, who spent the last two seasons as Kansas
State's co-defensive coordinator.

In the wake of move-in day, you might be thinking about
welcoming a pet into your off-campus abode to help make that rental
feel a bit more like home. As with most decisions in life, there
are a lot of tips out there to assist you in selecting and raising
your ideal creature, and once again, I've compiled (and
embellished) some of the best for your perusal:

This Saturday marks the moment when the producers take back the
Capitol Square from the bankers. In a place of wing tips and
expensive suits, a few straw hats and bib overalls will spring up.
Instead of paper-shuffling professionals, the square is populated
by dirt-working growers. If there were ever a moment when the two
identities of Madison and Dane County are fused, it is at the first
outdoor Farmers' Market of the year.

If you stand very close to me, you might notice a small scar in
front of my right ear. The scar is from surgery I underwent when I
was seven. After a long series of tests, a mysterious bump turned
out to be nothing serious, and a short procedure was required to
remove it. Ever since, there have been no after-effects other than
the scar.
