Since there are so few authentically brilliant horror films made
due to the genre's inherent disadvantages (easy to do, hard to do
well), we are annually swamped with a deluge of wimpy PG-13 wannabe
chillers and ill-advised remakes. After wading through this crap,
audiences have only embraced a handful of recent horror films and
chances are, if it comes time to watch a Halloween-appropriate
movie, most of you will end up throwing in something familiar but
dependable or just saying the hell with it and seeing 'Saw
II.'

It was a Pyrrhic victory of sorts for the Wisconsin Badgers
football team Saturday afternoon. The improbable come- from-behind
38-34 win over the Gophers in Minneapolis saw a miraculous blocked
punt by freshman linebacker Jonathan Casillas and an ensuing fumble
recovery by sophomore defensive back Ben Strickland in the end zone
for the go ahead touchdown with just 30 seconds remaining.

MINNEAPOLIS-When a team trails by 10 points with less than three
minutes remaining, after giving up more than 400 yards on the
ground, few would expect a victory. Even the head coach.

On Friday, MGM producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli
confirmed the rumor that has been circulating around the Internet
for months now: The blond-haired, blue-eyed Daniel Craig will be
the next James Bond.

Al Pacino is a great actor with an interesting dilemma. His
commanding screen presence is so distinctive and so forceful that
he often gets accused of overacting. Yes, he does hoot and holler
profanely in just about every performance-in fact, I would say he's
got the patent on eruptions of onscreen rage-but his torrents of
anger are usually essential and, damn it, hugely entertaining.

On a disappointing weekend across the board for the Badger
faithful, the UW volleyball team (5-1 Big Ten, 13-2 overall) had
its share of ups and downs. In the clouds after dominating No. 18
Ohio State (3-3, 10-5) on Friday, No. 8 Wisconsin was brought back
to Earth on Saturday with a surprisingly quick defeat against No. 4
Penn State (6-0, 14-2) that snapped their 15-match home winning
streak. But even after the tough defeat, the team remains
optimistic.

The UW women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak
Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory on the road against a very
strong Michigan squad. The Badgers, with goals by senior midfielder
Katie Lindenmuth and junior midfielder Allison Priess, defeated the
Wolverines 2-1 to earn their first Big Ten win of the season, and
improved their overall record to 6-6-2.

If you're like me, then you've totally become addicted to the
newest pop angst drama, The Supreme Court, or, as the cool people
call it, The SC. Initially, I thought it was just going to be some
boring stereotypical fluff to sell the glamour of old age,
upper-class East Coast living and fashionable robes to Generation X
and Y, but I was totally wrong!

When you think Wisconsin fullbacks, you think Alan Ameche. Or at
least you should. But over the past three years senior fullback
Matt Bernstein has become an immensely popular player for the
Badgers. His enormous frame earns his bruising runs between the
tackles in short-yardage situations and the occasional graceful
hurdle (think Shaq doing a pirouette; doesn't seem possible, but
it's a pleasant surprise).

Why is it that the quality shows on network television are
usually cancelled just as they're hitting their stride? Apparently
witless twaddle like \Will and Grace,"" ""Dharma and Greg"" and
""Ally McBeal"" can fester and stink up the tube for years on end,
yet all-around-wonderful shows like ""Freaks and Geeks and
""Undeclared"" (from ""40-Year-Old Virgin"" director Judd Apatow)
can't even make it through one season.

Saturday kicks off what should be the most competitive Big Ten
conference season in years. Nearly every team believes it has what
it takes to contend for the title. Even programs beginning anew at
Illinois and Indiana showed more life during the non-conference
portion of the schedule than they have in years. Though the team
that becomes the 2005 Big Ten champion may not be playing for the
Roses and a national title this year, it will likely be because the
rugged conference schedule will allow no team to emerge
undefeated.

I sipped my second beer and started to relax. So far my second
trip to the biker bar was uneventful. Spotted Cow was on tap,
\Hell's Bells"" was blasting from the ceiling and I was chatting up
a retired Army captain. I saw the photographer, Lauren, take
practice photos of the bar and laugh at something a biker said from
across the room.

Barry Alvarez knew coming into his final season that the NFL
draft had taken his top four defensive linemen from a year ago.
What the Badgers' head coach could not have predicted was losing
his top two reserves from a year ago as well.

More than anything else, the summer of 2005 will be remembered
for jumpstarting the renaissance of the R-rated sex comedy.

Moviegoers tend to hold a semi-reliable consensus about movies
of the summer, primarily because thematically trivial popcorn
extravaganzas are the season's bread-and-butter. Critics also, for
the most part, aren't prepping for the Oscars and gearing their
expectations toward \Million Dollar Baby;"" more than ever, the
emphasis is on sheer entertainment value.

Flash back seven years, to a crisp October night when Purdue's
Drew Brees blew through Madison to the tune of 55 completions in a
record 83 attempts for 494 yards. Brees ripped apart a young UW
secondary until freshman corners Mike Echols and Jamar Fletcher
snared key interceptions that led the Badgers to victory.

The first leg of the UW softball team's Big Ten road schedule
was certainly an exciting one. In a weekend chock full of thrilling
comebacks, offensive onslaughts and clutch performances, the
Badgers (6-8 Big Ten, 20-20 overall) were able to snap their
seven-game Big Ten losing streak and make it back to .500 as they
took three out of four games from Purdue and Indiana.

Riding the wave of a four-game winning streak, the UW softball
team will open its Big Ten road schedule this weekend against
Purdue and Indiana. After back-to-back doubleheader sweeps over
North Dakota State and Loyola-Chicago, the Badgers (3-7 Big Ten,
17-19 overall) will try to use that momentum to snap their seven
game Big Ten losing streak.
