No. 17 Iowa made a statement Saturday afternoon when it rolled through No. 20 Northwestern by a score of 40-10, putting it in control of its own destiny in the Big Ten West.

1. Stave’s roller coaster ride
After losing two straight games to Minnesota last week, No. 16 Wisconsin (4-4, 12-6) looks to regroup as it faces Iowa (0-8, 10-11) and No. 3 Nebraska (7-1, 16-2) on the road this weekend.
There’s no question that Rafael Gaglianone deserves an enormous amount of credit for Wisconsin’s 23-21 win over Nebraska last Saturday. To have the mental fortitude to put two misses behind him, including one just 1:22 earlier is incredible to see from a college kicker, especially a sophomore from Brazil who’s gained infamy more for his celebrations than his placekicking skills.
In recent years the coaching carousel has been more of a staple in Wisconsin than cheese curds. With head coach Paul Chryst now leading the charge, the Badgers are on their third head coach in as many years. Contrast that with Iowa, a program that has had two coaches since 1979, and Wisconsin, not Iowa, seems like the program in a rut.
On perhaps the most controversial play of Wisconsin’s game against Troy, junior Leon Jacobs looped, untouched, around the left side of the Trojans’ offensive line on a first-down blitz and obliterated quarterback Brandon Silvers.
No. 16 Wisconsin (0-2 Big Ten, 8-4 overall) suffered its second consecutive loss of the season to 12th-ranked Ohio State (1-1, 12-2) today at St. John’s Arena in Columbus in a hard fought five-set heartbreaker: 25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11.
Wisconsin has long been known as a power-running, old- school offense with five behemoths punishing their opponents and making crater-sized holes for the stable of talented runners behind them. When you sift through the ranks of Badger alumni in the NFL, that history is proven by the number of high-caliber professional offensive linemen Wisconsin has produced.
Hawaii head coach Norm Chow is now three games into his fourth season since arriving from his alma mater, Utah. In his first three seasons, Chow and the Warriors have struggled finding success, finishing with a combined 8-29 record.
The Badgers may see some rainbows and a wave or two, but it won’t be a vacation for Wisconsin (2-1) as they take on Hawaii Saturday night. Coming off its convincing win over Troy, UW is rightfully bringing some confidence into this game, but the 2-1 Rainbow Warriors are much more intimidating than their historical performance suggests.
Lauren Carlini and the Badgers picked up a pair of victories, but Wisconsin still had its eight-match winning streak snapped by Arkansas.
Though they won a pair of matches over the weekend, the Badgers will begin Big Ten play with the bitter taste of defeat still in their mouths.
The original Trojan War was said to have lasted 10 years. If some Wisconsin homer were to write an Illiad about the Badgers’ victory over Troy, they would say this Trojan war lasted about an hour and a half until the road team was out of it.
Volleyball
Fresh off a 26-7 win over Presbyterian Sept. 5, Miami (1-0), of the Mid-American Conference, comes to Madison Saturday to take on Wisconsin (0-1) in the Badgers’ home opener.
London synthpop group Oh Wonder released their self-titled debut and it’s already gaining some hype, probably partially due to their SoundCloud origins. For the past year, the group had been releasing one song per month in an effort to gain popularity leading to their album release. The calculated approach seems to have paid off.
