Somewhere in Michael Weiss’ childhood home in Reno, Nevada, is a child-size kickboard and a pull buoy, worn and faded from both age and wear and tear. A set of hastily drawn Olympic rings adorns the pull buoy, sparking Weiss’ mother to snap a picture to send to her now 25-year-old son, who is less than a week away from being so close to his Olympic dream that he can taste it.

There’s a new face running the show for the Wisconsin Badgers’ defense this season. With former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda off to LSU, Justin Wilcox is taking over the unit that allowed the second-fewest yards per game in the country last season, so expectations will be high in 2016.

In one of nature’s more endearing displays, a panda paws at a narrow, basil-colored stick of bamboo. Propping the chute up like a flute, the panda tries to meander the bamboo into its mouth. It leans back just a little too far, awkwardly rolling onto its back as it gnaws on the chute like a toothless child. After the victorious snap of fiber, the panda props itself up toward the zoo crowd around it, flashing a hint of pride as it goes for another bite.

There’s a certain paradoxical mental state most athletes try to reach when they’re in the thick of competition that seems too elementary to actually be true. When a running back is waiting for the center to snap the ball to the quarterback, a pitcher begins her windup after carefully selecting her next pitch and a hitter takes her last practice swing before stepping into the batter’s box, the last thing they want to be doing is thinking. It’s about trusting their instincts, allowing their studies of the game to become second nature and, perhaps most importantly, leaning on their set of hardened psychological skills that allow them to perform at a high level.

At least two Wisconsin Badgers were taken in each of the last eight NFL drafts, but that trend of success could end in 2016. Paul Chryst’s 10-win 2015 team had a number of players declare for the NFL, but only one of them is a lock to hear his named called on draft weekend.

Quarterback Bobby Dunn hasn’t played football since high school, but after training in the fall and a successful tryout this spring, he’s taking snaps with the Badgers’ offense at Camp Randall Stadium.

Bobby Dunn’s favorite place to sit in Camp Randall Stadium is Section M. You can get a nice tan up there. On second thought, maybe it’s Section O. Locking your fingers together and contorting your body into a makeshift vowel is pretty cool. Hold that thought—Section E’s the best. You get to sit right behind the Badgers’ bench, close to the dizzying flurry of activity that dominates Camp Randall for seven Saturdays every fall.

For the first time since the Joel Stave versus Tanner McEvoy competition began brewing in 2014, the Badgers are working through spring practice without knowing who their starting quarterback will be come fall camp.

When NFL hopefuls are competing and trying to make themselves more appealing to pro scouts, coaches and executives, they have to find every way possible to contribute on the field and offer value to a team. At the Wisconsin Pro Day Wednesday at the McClain Center, many of the Badgers headed for the draft did just that.

Since then, it has gone 13-6 under Greg Gard, who until Monday, was the head coach on an interim basis only. Let's take a look at Gard's transition into the head coaching role he has undoubtedly earned.
