As we crawl toward the end of the semester, the snow is starting to fall and the degrees are dropping; it’s enough to make you want to bundle up in layers of flannel and fleece, turn your bedroom into a blanket cave and never leave.

Entering this season, the Wisconsin Badgers’ secondary was the biggest question mark defensively as they had to replace three starters on the back end with questionable depth. Now, the only question about this group is just how good they can be.

Before the season started, it seemed clear that Wisconsin’s linebacker corps would be the strength, not just of the defense, but of the entire team. While that has been true thus far, it hasn’t been because of the same high-profile players many expected.

After gaining a commanding two set lead, No. 3 Wisconsin (12-2 Big Ten, 20-3 overall) was driven to the brink of defeat Saturday night, needing late-match heroics in a decisive fifth set to put away the Purdue Boilermakers (5-9, 15-10) by a score of 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 16-25, 15-10.

Last year, the Wildcats pulled off a huge win at Camp Randall Stadium as the Badgers fell short in the redzone at the end of the game. Peavy caught a pass in the endzone with 24 seconds left that was initially ruled a touchdown but overturned after review, a controversial call that he refused to forget.

The No.17/No.13 Wisconsin Badgers (0-4 men, 1-3 women) were hoping to come into Gabrielsen Natatorium Friday and make history, but instead it was the No.7/No.8 Georgia Bulldogs (4-0, 4-0) who came out of the pool victorious after holding Wisconsin to only nine event victories in the two-day dual.

The big game of the weekend was Wisconsin’s 23-17 overtime win over Nebraska at Camp Randall Stadium, knocking the Cornhuskers from the ranks of the unbeaten and shaking up the race for the Big Ten West. Other than that, it was a fairly ho-hum weekend in the Big Ten. As such, there are no changes in positioning in this week’s power rankings.

One of the biggest perks for the No. 17/No. 13 Wisconsin Badgers this season is the top talent they face every time they get in the pool to compete. They have already had strong showings against three ranked teams, and look to continue that success against No. 7/No. 8 Georgia in Athens.

The College Football Playoff picture received a serious shake-up this weekend after Penn State upset Ohio State in Happy Valley. For the first time this year, the Buckeyes dropped out of the top two of the AP rankings. Ohio State’s performance against Wisconsin and a 24-21 loss to unranked Penn State have shown flaws in the offense, and simultaneously snapped its 20-game road win streak. To get back to the playoffs, the Buckeyes will likely need to win out.
