It’s a warm and sunny January morning when professor Mike Ballweg enters the room, ready to get to work with more than 40 people waiting for the day’s lesson. His students — a mixture of local farmers and agricultural agents — are arrayed around the tables of the local pub, which has opened early to host the seminar.

I wholeheartedly went into Spring Break last month with the intention of catching up on school work I fell behind on, but instead I binged an entire series on cults. Though to be honest, this isn’t entirely out of character for me on a regular week. Netflix’s new series “Wild Wild Country” hooked me from the start, and I think non-cult enthusiasts will find it just as addicting.

A group of athletic-wear-clad people sit on the wooden floor of Gym 6 in UW-Madison’s Natatorium. They spike a ball over a net like any other volleyball match. In this game, though, the net sits 3.5 feet above the ground, and players must remain seated during the game.

The Wisconsin’s men’s tennis team (3-2 Big Ten, 11-7 overall) split their two home conference matches against ranked opponents this past weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The team got off to a great start by knocking off No. 44 Penn State (1-4, 11-9) on Friday, 4-3 in a tightly contested match. The Badgers scored an important win over a ranked opponent and improved to a perfect 10-0 at home this year.

Wisconsin (2-2 Big Ten, 16-13 overall) struggled against No. 24 Ohio State (2-4, 21-8) in its first conference series of the year, dropping two games of three against the Buckeyes in Columbus. Sophomore Kaitlyn Menz, who was second team All-Big Ten last season, couldn’t stop the Buckeyes’ hot bats in either of her starts, losing the opening and closing games of the weekend. Along with being outhit, the Badgers were outplayed in the field. Wisconsin committed seven errors compared to Ohio State’s three, with five of those errors resulting in runs for the Buckeyes.

Welcome back to Sciencecast, the Daily Cardinal's science podcast

Lauryn and I are joined by Dr. James Conway, an infectious disease
expert at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. We discuss the
various aspects of immunization and vaccination efforts in the US and
abroad, as well as how infectious diseases like the flu can spread
rapidly, as it did this past winter in one of the US's most severe and
widespread flu seasons.

“Annihilation” is a melting pot. It’s quite difficult to compare it to a singular film that might capture its mood and personality. It carries the same cerebral, ominous tones that were signature traits in director Alex Garland’s previous hit, “Ex Machina,” and now bleeds into the increasingly horrific expedition via our protagonist crew.

If there’s one celebrity who I could become best friends with, it would be Mindy Kaling. “The Mindy Project” was one of my favorite rom-coms, and when it ended, I was horrified I would no longer have a weekly hangout with Mindy — so I mostly just stalked her Instagram. Luckily, she wasn’t gone for too long, as she premiered her new show “Champions” earlier this month on NBC. Though it’s not the greatest, any Mindy is better than no Mindy.

Weather was the main factor for the weekend series between the Wisconsin Badgers softball team (1-0 Big Ten, 14-11 overall) and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (0-1, 15-15) as temperatures hovered below 29 degrees on Friday, Saturday delaying the series first game until Sunday, when the weather took a fortuitous turn and peaked above the coveted 29-degree mark.
