Three short days away from Valentine's Day. Perhaps one of the
most difficult holidays to \celebrate""-single people hate it and
guys in a relationship fear it due to the dangerous possibility of
screwing up. The time-tested and approved Valentine's Day excursion
includes dinner and a movie, but renting the wrong movie (say,
""Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"") can put an end to what may have
been a wonderful evening. Here are three great films for a romantic
evening.

As the fourth month of the season begins, competition grows
fiercer and rankings become more important than ever in the NCAA.
But as soon as February turns into March, the empty NCAA men's
basketball brackets will be filled.

The state of Texas plans to execute a schizophrenic Wisconsin
native Thursday, and the only thing that may save this man is a
barrage of letters, e-mails and phone calls to the Texas Board of
Pardons and Paroles.

Timber wolves are seen as both beautiful and majestic animals
that should be protected at any cost and as evil, bloodthirsty
predators that should be eliminated. This duality of beauty and the
beast has once again put the wolf in the middle of a heated debate.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is attempting to
de-list the wolf from a threatened species and some groups will be
pushing to change wolves' status to \furbearing."" This could be
the first step in establishing a hunting season on wolves in
Wisconsin.

For the last two years, a pall has been cast over Wisconsin with
the so-called caucus scandals. Quite frankly, as a New Jersian, I
found the Wisconsin standard of corruption to be pretty weak. I
practically thought having state employees doing campaign work was
mandated under the law.

Over the past summer, along with war abroad, recalls and a shaky
economy at home, another event has gone somewhat under the radar.
Though sparsely covered, it deserves more attention; it says a lot
about the state of our current political discourse. In Texas, the
Democrats are in hiding.

Entering the second week of playoff basketball, postseason play
has seemingly brought out the best of competition, as no team in
either conference has prevailed in the second round thus far. From
top to bottom, the Western Conference carries the strongest of
championship contenders, yet no team so far has dominated their
first round series enough to be considered a sure lock for either
the conference or NBA finals.

I find myself in the incredibly awkward position of defending
one of my least favorite people in the world-Sen. Rick Santorum,
R-Pa.

It's a crazy world out there. With war, a bad economy and a
political system all topsy-turvy, The Onion reads like The New York
Times and The New York Times reads like The Onion. For instance,
the government really doesn't take any pains to disguise their
favoritism to Halliburton. Another piece of news that really has to
strike one as absurd is that people are actually surprised over
recent comments by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa.
(04/23/03 6:00am)
On Sunday, the Associated Press released a profile piece on Sen.
Rick Santorum, R-Pa.-the third-highest ranking Republican in the
Senate, and a man who White House political director Ken Mehlman
called \one of the original compassionate conservatives."" The
article outlined his path to power-first as a congressman from
Pittsburgh, then as a brash Senate candidate that rode the Contract
With America wave to victory in 1994, then as a matured Senator at
the top levels of prestige and influence.

They watched as their lead evaporated from 13 points with 4:06
remaining in the first half, to two with 11:15 left in the second.
They saw Minnesota sophomore forward Rick Rickert catch fire from
the field in the second half, with the big man scoring 13 points on
a stunning array of shots. They heard the record crowd of 14,907
grow louder with each improbable Minnesota three-pointer until the
Barn shook from its cheers.

It is a battle of the borders this Sunday with Wisconsin (10-4
Big Ten, 20-6 overall) playing away from home against an
always-potent team in the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-5, 16-8). The
game will be a challenge for the Badgers who play away from their
home court and have the added pressure of fighting for a share of
the Big Ten Title.

I've learned a lot about hope in the past few years. I've
learned that hope can come from unlikely places and can be the most
powerful ally even as we are defeated again and again. But the
moment after turning on the news early Saturday morning to find
reports of a missing Columbia, my entire sense of hope seemed to
vanish. Hours later I realized that my feelings of hopelessness
were a dishonor to the seven astronauts aboard Columbia.

There comes a time in the college basketball season when teams
realize how vital the upcoming games in the schedule are for their
mere survival. There comes a point when one loss will push a team
off \the bubble,"" out of the NCAA Tournament and into the NIT. And
there comes a time, especially in a conference as competitive as
the Big Ten, when several teams battle for those precious remaining
spots in the NCAA Tournament.
