One attractive aspect of the UW-Madison campus is the Terrace at
Memorial Union. It is a place for students relax with some friends,
drink a pitcher and when the weather gets warm, enjoy a bit of
music while the westerly breezes roll off Lake Mendota.

A music genre is in dire straits when the best album it has to
boast in recent memory can be best described as 'a very solid
album.' Well, for some time now, heavy metal has been that genre,
and Lullabies to Paralyze, the new album from alt-metal stalwarts
Queens of the Stone Age, is that very solid album.

When a new band forms and makes waves, many critics and fans
anticipate success for their debut album. The debut sets the stage
for a band to define its style, genre, talent and direction.

Music abhors a vacuum. No musician in history has been able to
escape comparisons to those who came before, ever since the first
primitive percussionists were inspired by the sound a rock made
when it was used to cave in an enemy's skull. The U.K.'s Kasabian
are just as indebted to their influences as those early hominids,
and maybe 19 percent as violent.

No St. Patrick's Day would be complete without some good,
old-fashioned dancing. When alcohol and good company combine,
someone will be doing a jig and waving a glass before morning.
Whether caught up in the wonderful energy of a classic Irish
drinking song or another track that simply sings the praises of
everyone's favorite intoxicant, something about the holiday
particularly demands good music. The Daily Cardinal offers up some
suggested listening for your drunken St. Patrick's Day
debauchery.

Some albums pack such a punch that after completing the last
track, the listener feels like he has been run over by an AstroVan
full of rock 'n' roll. Other albums are so tame the listener is
practically asleep by the time the album finishes. Almost Here, the
debut album by Chicago five-piece The Academy Is..., falls exactly
in the middle of these two musical extremes.

The delayed debut of LCD Soundsystem, a.k.a. James Murphy, may
have been a blessing in disguise. Murphy sat back and watched the
next big thing, dance-punk, quickly rise and fall; many of the
leading bands of the movement either moved in a different
direction, like The Liars, or failed to release a consistent album
after successful EPs, like !!!. The dream of dancing to rock music
faded and indie kids returned from the dance floor and resumed
crossing their arms. The cynicism that has recently surrounded this
dubious genre did not affect Murphy one bit.

Last week the pop/punk trio Blink-182 announced they are going
on hiatus of an indefinite length: \While there is no set plan for
the band to begin working together again, no one knows what
tomorrow may bring,"" the band's management said in a statement on
Blink's website. Rumors of a permanent breakup swirled the
Internet, and when I read the rumors, I almost passed out.

Fighting the competition from such radio-crowding rockers as
Franz Ferdinand or the Killers, Hidden in Plain View has the
ability to prolong the attention span of the suburban masses who
have found solace in pop punk with their latest album Life in
Dreaming.

Goldfinger has shown their fans many sides. They were an upstart
punk/ska outfit when they released their self-titled debut album in
1996. Their extraordinary live show was perfectly timed for the ska
revival of the mid-to-late '90s.

It is hard to miss the campus chalkings from UW-Madison student
group Stop the War, but the organization is greater than simply
pigment on pavement.

Imagine trying to concentrate while scores of college girls
repeatedly beg for \Sex at Six"" at the top of their lungs. Should
a person give in to the demands, or hold out to make the
performance all the more satisfying? The Profits, an independent
band comprised of four talented Madison locals, often face this
predicament at their concerts.

It happened to Milli Vanilli and ruined their careers, one of
the scariest things that could ever happen live on-stage to a
performer, a malfunction of the pre-recorded vocals. It happened,
once again, during the most recent episode of \Saturday Night
Live."" Was it a Halloween curse? No. Instead, it was bad talent at
its finest, the perfect scare in the career of Miss Ashlee
Simpson.
