School might be back in full swing, but why memorize theorems
and formulas when you could memorize the lyrics of Survivor's Eye
of the Tiger""? Why surrender to Helen C. White Library when
stadiums of screaming fans are clamoring to hear you jam on your
plastic Fender guitar? That's right folks, it's time for the return
of another cherished institution: ""Rock Band.""

Call me crazy, but despite the number of summer-movie classics
2008 has begotten, I am not sad to see moviegoing season go by the
wayside. The reason? Movie audiences are REALLY annoying. Here are
four inept moviegoers that have soured my theater enjoyment this
summer:

Nutritionists recommend sticking to the perimeter of the grocery
store in order to buy the most healthy foods. However, with the
cost of groceries rising (five bucks for strawberries) and the
average college student's budget getting smaller and smaller, the
time has come for creative and thrifty trips to the supermarket.

Like approximately 9,000 other students at UW-Madison, July 7
was one of the worst days of my college career. With the simple
phrase, You did not receive tickets,"" the UW Ticket Office smashed
my hopes of another season spent ""Jumping Around"" Camp
Randall.

So you've just moved into your first apartment or house, and
your cabinets are as empty as Memorial Library on a Saturday night.
You can't wait to go to the grocery store to get all your favorite
foods, but when you sit down to eat your first meal, you realize
something is missing - or, to be exact, a lot of things are
missing. The chicken is sticking to the pan, you can't get it out,
and the fresh veggies you got from the farmers' market are nearly
tasteless.

Certain years tend to stand out in the annals of history more so
than others. 2008 might be shaping into such a year: the Chinese
superpower is here and now; we have an important election year and
a presidential candidate that is breaking historical molds; we also
have economic, domestic and foreign policy issues the likes of
which we haven't seen in 50-plus years; and on campus, a new
chancellor is beginning her term on shaky political and financial
ground.

As the price at the pump continue to soar, our budget for summer
frolicking shrinks. People are choosing either to vacation closer
to home or forgo them altogether because of high gas prices. We are
all feeling the pinch, and we dream of a gasoline independent
world. Will it ever come?

After deep playoff runs in the 2007-'08 season, both the UW
men's and women's hockey programs look to come back strong in
2008-'09. Strong nuclei of returning players look to provide more
postseason success for both squads.

Freshmen year rocks and sucks all at the same time. That's what
makes it freshmen year. It's awesome that you can go out any night
you want and drink as much as you want, but the 36 hour hangover
really sucks. It's sweet to be able to attend whatever class you
choose, but it sucks if skipping that class bites you in the butt
later on the exam. It's all about learning lessons and knowing your
options. I'm here to help you through the lessons of freshmen
cuisine.

In attendance at the game between the Brewers and the Chicago
Cubs Thursday afternoon was a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. As such,
it was fair that Milwaukee didn't lose Yovani Gallardo to any major
injury after he and Prince Fielder went charging toward first base,
at the same time, to break up a drag bunt.

Actually, the movie is 108 minutes long, but who's counting? In
this whodunit - or rather, who will do it - with a modern twist,
Dr. Gramm (Al Pacino), a forensic psychiatrist, is faced with death
threats when a serial killer he testified against is put on death
row. The suspects? The serial killer (Neal McDonough), the
romantically rejected teaching assistant (Alicia Witt), the
disgruntled dean (Deborah Kara Unger), the emotional assault victim
(Leelee Sobieski), the one-night stand (Leah Cairns), the
irresponsible secretary (Amy Brenneman) and the nosy student
(Christopher Redman). Each loom over Gramm's head as he is given 88
minutes to live.

The search for the perfect golden-brown, crispy french fry is a
dangerous and greasy task few are brave enough to take on. Plain
fries may all look relatively similar, but the depths of that
sliced potato can contain unlimited flavor and goodness. Fries are
much more than trashy bar food - they can be transcendent.

The face of Madison has changed frequently over the past few
years with the addition of numerous high rise apartments. The
recent reconstruction of University Square makes many wonder when
it will stop, but, as much as it pains me to say it, this is
actually good for the housing market in Madison.
