Each semester, students dedicate weekends to spending quality time with their parents, and both the University and Greek organizations host so-called parent’ weekends. Whether you are in Greek life or not, having your parents come to visit you in Madison can be one of the most exciting yet stressful weekends of the semester for students.

NEW YORK — As Brad Davison walked off the court for the final time in the 2017-’18 season, head coach Greg Gard was right by his side. Davison put his left arm around Gard’s right shoulder. Gard reciprocated, draping his right arm on his freshman point guard’s heavily wrapped left.

NEW YORK — When junior forward Khalil Iverson was fouled with less than one second to play and Wisconsin (8-11 Big Ten, 15-17 overall) leading by five points, freshman guard Brad Davison’s hands shot to the sky in excitement. Seconds earlier, with UW leading by only three, Iverson made what was the Badgers’ biggest play of the season, intercepting an errant Maryland (8-11, 19-13) inbound pass to help Wisconsin advance to the third round of the Big Ten Tournament.

After a hard-fought close game, 13-seed Wisconsin (2-15 Big Ten, 9-21 overall) fell to 12-seed Northwestern (5-12, 12-19) by a score of 63-68 on Wednesday afternoon. Northwestern will now advance in the tournament and take on 5-seed Iowa on Thursday.

No matter how many times freshman guard Brad Davison clapped his hands on defense, let out fist pumps to the crowd on offense or hit highly contested jumpers, No. 2 Michigan State (16-2 Big Ten, 28-3 overall) refused to go away.

It’s a little past 6:45 in the morning when David Drake pulls his truck up the hill into Owen Park, on Madison’s near west side. The view from the top of the hill is surprisingly wooded — a restored prairie criss-crossed with snowy trails slopes down into a forest, which Drake says is a favorite haunt of the neighborhood turkeys. The only orienting landmarks are the UW Hospital towers to the east, which glint gold in the sunrise.

“Shadow of the Colossus” is the best kind of miserable — it paints a painful picture of a cold and empty world that just doesn’t care anymore. It’s a beautiful world, but any attempt of building something here fell into decay long ago. What little semi-intelligent life you do come across must be killed in the name of a “rescue the damsel” quest that is evil and doomed from the beginning.

Last year, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team finished the regular season with nine total wins. And while it has been a bumpy year, to say the least, the Badgers have shown vast improvements throughout their 2017-’18 campaign, though the numbers and statistics may not say so.

In an attempt to counter perceptions that its majors are unemployable, UW-Madison’s College of Letters and Science celebrated the grand opening of its new career center, SuccessWorks, Wednesday evening.

Less than an hour after Wisconsin (3-9 Big Ten, 10-15 overall) dropped its third game of the week, injured sophomore point guard D’Mitrik Trice took to Twitter with a message for UW’s fan base. “Stick with us!” he wrote following the Badgers’ 68-63 loss to Maryland.

For the majority of Saturday afternoon, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team (2-10 Big Ten, 9-16 overall) made it a competitive game against the No 18 Ohio State women’s basketball team (8-3, 19-5) in front of a season-high 6,623 Kohl Center crowd. The Buckeyes’ fortitude and senior leadership proved to be too much for the Badgers in the fourth quarter, however, as they pulled away to seal their 68-55 victory.

Hockey is vastly different than any other sport. It’s remarkably fast, uniquely physical and fiercely emotional. The flow to the game is graceful and captivating, and it demands fortitude. But one of the most notable aspects of hockey that differentiates the game from any other team sport — an element that often gets overlooked by fans and is a primary cause of those more tangible distinctions — is the amount of time that each player spends on the ice at a time.

“I don’t think the work ethic was where it needed to be. They obviously wanted it more. It was on us. We didn’t bring what we had to bring. We have seen this week after week where we don’t bring the work ethic, and it needs to change tomorrow night.”

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team (0-4 Big Ten, 7-10 overall) wrapped up their tough opening stretch of conference play Sunday afternoon as the No. 13 Maryland Terrapins (4-0, 15-2) used a 20-4 run in the second and third quarters to secure a 71-44 victory at the Kohl Center.

Coming into the season, redshirt junior Aleem Ford wasn’t sure just how much he’d contribute to the 2017-’18 Wisconsin Badgers (1-1 Big Ten, 5-7 overall). But after taking advantage of his early season opportunities, Ford moved into UW’s starting lineup just four games into the year. With a new role, his goals changed as well. Ford said after a practice last week that he went from merely wanting to crack UW’s rotation to wanting to improve his rebounding, his 3-point shooting and his ability to create offense.

I’m going to graduate this year, but I don’t think I’m quite ready to settle down and work in an office somewhere. I have the idea that I want to travel the world for a bit. But I don’t want to just live of my mom and dad’s money, or anything (I don’t think they’d let me do that, anyway!)--I want to work while I’m moving around.

Indianapolis — Wisconsin freshman running back Jonathan Taylor’s longest run in the Big Ten Championship was a measly seven yards. It occurred on UW’s (9-1 Big Ten, 12-1 overall) first offensive play of the second half and the Badgers’ freshman phenom would pick up only 10 more yards for the entirety of the game.

INDIANAPOLIS — One year after falling to Penn State in the Big Ten Championship, Wisconsin (9-1 Big Ten, 12-1 overall) arrived in Indianapolis looking to not only win the Big Ten, but also punch a ticket to the College Football Playoff.
