A year ago, I had the great honor, privilege and luck of being
able to fly with the Green Bay Packers to their game in San
Francisco (my dad won a contest at work and picked me over my mom).
Sometime between the crab dinner and the personal police escort to
the game, I remember thinking how nice it would be if the Packers
could win a few games down the stretch for Brett Favre and send him
out on a winning note.

College sports are full of upsets, heartbreaks, miracles and

Roughly a week ago, I found myself working under deadline while
sequestered in an empty classroom with a laptop, the frigid dregs
of a cup of coffee and the wish it was not 3:30 a.m. Previous
generations might have described this as burning the midnight
oil,"" a phrase suggesting cloistered monks hunched over papyrus
scrolls by lamplight, a marked contrast from the over-caffeinated
undergraduate dividing time between bathroom breaks and staring at
a blank Word document.

Ben Franklin once said, Those who would give up essential

As children, we were shielded from the outside world. Niether
Barney nor the Carebears talked much about freebasing. There was no
abortion clinic on Sesame Street. One of the most poignant moments
in The Things We Lost in the Fire"" occurs when children are
confronted with drug addiction, because in the heart of a drug
addict is an adult that wishes to return to the crib or to the
womb. But as any addict will tell you, achieving that goal isn't
possible for long, (why else would they call it chasing?) and
eventually reality hits harder than it ever has before.

My fellow Americans, I come before you today to make an
announcement that is going to fricking blow your minds. After
several exploratory committees and countless hours poured over
extensive research I have decided to throw my hat into the ring for
the presidency of this great and prosperous nation. This may come
as a shock to those near and dear to me, but I have been
considering it for a good 10 minutes now, and it really seems like
a good idea.

Jimmy Eat World's success has never been about trends. It has
never been about the mainstream, and it has certainly never been
about being cool. Meticulously building an empire on awkward-geek
chic, the Arizona quartet have amassed a flawless catalog of catchy
tunes about heartbreak, poppy anthems for the rejected and
sing-song stadium jams for individuality.

Deep inside the heart of every artistic soul is a bead-wearing,
goat-toting gypsy minstrel, shouting profanities in foreign tongues
to anyone within earshot. In Beirut's new album, The Flying Club
Cup, frontman and lead songwriter Zach Condon releases that gypsy
(minus the profanities), and boy can that gypsy wail.

Republican' and spit on me, said Sara Mikolajczak, junior and

I am 21 years old. I am therefore able to legally drink alcohol,

question: there are none). I am also old enough to have had to
purchase ""Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"" in both VHS and DVD
