A student arriving on campus for the first time in the early 1920s would have found themselves at a university where parading down State Street in blackface, conducting mock peace pipe ceremonies on Library Mall and ridiculing Jewish and Asian-American students in student publications were normal behaviors, and where a campus fraternity called the Klu Klux Klan enforced white supremacy vigilantly and with limited opposition.

Six months ago, I started a self-imposed hiatus from writing as I began my semester in Italy. Having consumed all the carbohydrates I can reasonably eat and said “alora” more times than you can count, however, I’m back. No ordinary issue would have been sufficient to awaken “Unopinionated” from its slumber. This is a topic very near and dear to my heart.

Janelle Monae has always been on the fringe of breaking into the mainstream. She sang with the band Fun. on “We Are Young” — which topped the Billboard 100 for six weeks in 2012 — and she acted in not one, but two Best Picture nominees in 2016.

How many times have you overheard a conversation that went like this:

Home sweet home.

An average box of 12 condoms from Walgreens costs between $10 and $11, coming out to a little less than $1 per condom. A 4-ounce bottle of lube costs about five dollars, which means each ounce costs about $1.25. The cost of an unplanned pregnancy, abortion or STI is less calculable, but I think it’s fair to call the financial and emotional toll of these events significant.

2018 has been Donald Glover’s year. Or maybe it’s been our year since we get to enjoy Donald Glover? In any case, whether it’s winning a Grammy in January or landing the role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo prequel, Glover has been on fire.

The Wisconsin women’s tennis team (6-4) will travel to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-0) and James Madison Dukes (6-0), two teams with whom the Badgers do not have much history.

I need some help with a class assignment. I’m in an Introduction to Investment Management class, and each week students are given a topic to present. Topics can be almost everything. Last week, my friend was assigned cryptocurrency as a viable investment opportunity. He got to discuss a recent ICO and how it differs from the more recognizable IPO. Then he got to discuss the prevalence of ICO scams.

I’m a college senior graduating this coming May with a degree in anthropology. I don’t have a job lined up quite yet but I’m not too worried. My biggest concern is my health. I hate to admit it, but the last couple of years have been tough on my body.

I could desperately use some help. My boyfriend’s birthday is soon approaching, and I don’t have any decent gift ideas yet. His present last year was a Lego Collector’s Edition of the Millenium Falcon, which he loved. Deciding to get that was easy, because he’d lost his mind over it when we visited Legoland last year.

Three minutes and 42 seconds into Wisconsin’s (3-5 Big Ten, 10-11 overall) matchup with Iowa (2-7, 11-11) Tuesday night, the Badgers had taken nine shots. They had zero points to show for it. That about sums up the night UW had, getting tossed around by the Big Ten’s second worst team, 85-67.

The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to repeal so-called net neutrality rules, leaving many users, including students, concerned about their access to an open and equal internet experience.

As a resident and a house fellow, the residence halls were foundational in my social and academic college experience. Through neighbors down the hall, I found several of my best friends, learned about cultures from around the world and developed curiosities for academic disciplines I hardly knew existed. With nearly all first-year students living on campus, Housing helps form intimate communities to contrast the enormity of the University and brings together students from all academic, regional and ideological backgrounds to an unstructured social setting — a phenomenon not found elsewhere at the school to such significance. With how critical a role Housing plays in campus life, I am concerned about how the mandatory Dining deposit will impact low-income students' access to our state’s public flagship university.

The recent history of Wisconsin sports can be easily summed up in a few numbers. Simply uttering the phrases “408” or “38-1” is enough to elicit visceral responses from Badgers fans anywhere. Yet there is one numerical phrase equally seared into the memory of (as ESPN announcer Rod Gilmore repeatedly calls them) Bucky Badger fans. The ignominy of it still reverberates through the annals: 59-0.

As the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Associated Students of Madison, we made the deliberate decision as a body to not protest an invited conservative speaker, Jordan Peterson.

The Audre Lorde Housing Co-op — a tall, pale green house on North Frances Street — stands like a lonely relic of its former self, now home to only one person rather than the 15 members that it holds when at full capacity.
