Like him or not, Wisconsin was an excellent football program when Bret Bielema was at the helm. And it was like that for far longer than those who just want to give credit to Barry Alvarez’s program-building skills would like.

Fresh off a 26-7 win over Presbyterian Sept. 5, Miami (1-0), of the Mid-American Conference, comes to Madison Saturday to take on Wisconsin (0-1) in the Badgers’ home opener.

With a heavy heart and enough retrospect, we look to the future, to next year’s team. To attempt to put Monday night into some greater context, in my birth year of 1994, the Badgers made their third-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Since 1999, they have not missed the tournament, a remarkable stretch of consistency the likes of which few programs have achieved.

Ben Brust had quite a career at Wisconsin. He graduated as the Badgers’ all-time leader in career 3-pointers made with 235 and broke the school record for 3-pointers in a season twice, with 79 in the 2012-’13 season and then 96 in 2013-’14.

Let’s clear something up: Joel Stave is a better passer than Tanner McEvoy by a chasmic margin. There seems to be a false equivalency in the minds of some Wisconsin fans that McEvoy and Stave are both bad passers, but at least McEvoy can run. Stop it.

After losing wide receiver Jared Abbrederis and linebacker Chris Borland to the NFL last spring, Wisconsin not only lost two star players but also its biggest leaders on both sides of the ball.

I didn’t watch much of MTV’s Video Music Awards this year, but the one clip I did see was 15 seconds of Laverne Cox dancing and singing along to Beyoncé’s performance. Most of the crowd around her looked disinterested in the whole affair, but Cox was turning it out in the aisle. After watching, and re-watching the clip, my reaction was the same: I just kept shouting “YAAAAS” at my computer, if you’ll forgive my stanning.

If reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are correct, redshirt junior Tanner McEvoy will be the starting quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers when their season opens in Houston. McEvoy and the incumbent redshirt junior Joel Stave have been locked into a heated quarterback battle for the past month now, but it appears that McEvoy has emerged as the winner. If it is true, head coach Gary Andersen will be taking a huge risk, but one that is right for the Badgers.

After the 2013 season brought a new coaching staff and a transition to the 3-4 defense, changes will continue this fall as Wisconsin heads into the 2014 campaign.

Day Three of the 2014 National Football League Draft brought fortune to three Badgers, who will all continue their football careers with 2013 playoff teams.

Jared Abbrederis will join one of the NFL's great passing attacks, and a familiar one as well.
