Wisconsin was two last-second shots away from a winless week at the Kohl Center. But what was oh-so-close to the last nail in the Badgers’ coffin ended up becoming a home stand that just may mark the defining moment in a Big Ten title run.

Ben Brust grew up playing basketball in the driveway with his older brothers, and the only time he could get off a clear look was from the “square of relief” in the back of the driveway.

While you would be hard-pressed to find a Badger player or coach willing to admit it, Wisconsin has had this weekend’s matchup with No. 3 Michigan circled on the calendar for quite some time. Despite losing last weekend in Bloomington, Ind., the Wolverines (8-2 Big Ten, 21-2 overall) could easily be the best team in the nation and remain very much in control in a Big Ten race that is just about as tight as gets.

It had been nearly two full years since the Wisconsin men’s basketball team had beaten Iowa and with six minutes left still facing a nine-point deficit, it looked as if the Badgers were going to add yet another year to the drought.

Despite notching a 24-point victory in their last meeting with Illinois, the Badgers were anything but comfortable heading to Champaign to face a desperate Illini team. But on the strength of breakout performances from Illinois natives junior Ben Brust and sophomore Frank Kaminsky, Wisconsin was able to get back into the win column with a 74-68 victory.

For the third straight game, Wisconsin has failed to score 50 points, this time falling a single point shy of the mark in a 58-49 loss to No. 11 Ohio State Tuesday night. Although the Badgers (5-3 Big Ten, 14-7 overall) made a staggering 11 shots from 3-point range, they only managed to hit eight shots from inside the arc, resulting in virtually no inside presence the entire night.

Wisconsin (5-2 Big Ten, 14-6 overall) may have ended its two-game slide with a win over then-No. 12 Minnesota Saturday, but it won’t be easy for UW to turn that victory into a winning streak. The Badgers will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a showdown with the No. 11 Buckeyes (5-2, 15-4) Tuesday at the Value City Arena.

More than a rivalry win will be on the line Saturday when No. 12 Minnesota (3-3 Big Ten, 15-4 overall) comes to the Kohl Center to square off against Wisconsin (4-2, 13-6).

Wisconsin (4-2 Big Ten, 13-6 overall) shot 7-of-18 from the free throw line, including 0-of-5 in the final five minutes, en route to a 49-47 loss to No. 13 Michigan State (6-1, 17-3) Tuesday at the Kohl Center.

College football isn’t just a sport. College football is a business. With Bret Bielema, the former head coach of the Badgers, leaving a $2.7 million salary for a $700,000 raise, we’re reminded of the amount of money that changes hands. Consider that the Big Ten generates hundreds of millions of dollars per year solely from licensing of television rights and you’ll gain insight into just how huge the industry is. The television networks make millions, the advertising agencies make millions, and the coaches make millions. There’s only one group that’s left out: the players.

Just a few weeks ago, Wisconsin men’s basketball was not even considered a team worthy of NCAA Tournament consideration. After Tuesday night’s shocking upset on the road against No. 2 Indiana (3-1 Big Ten, 15-2 Overall), the Badgers (4-0, 13-4) are once again in the conversation for a Big Ten title. In front of 17,472 Hoosier fans in shock at Assembly Hall, Wisconsin pulled off the impossible with a 64-59 win.

Having failed to notch a truly marquee win in non-conference play, Wisconsin men’s basketball entered the conference season in need of a few big ones in order to make a 15th straight NCAA Tournament. Although they were able to avoid setbacks against lowly Penn State and Nebraska last week, the defining part of the Badgers’ season didn’t begin until Saturday’s game against No. 12 Illinois (1-3 Big Ten, 14-4 Overall), the beginning of an 11-game stretch in which every opponent is a legitimate NCAA Tournament contender. On the strength of a 14-0 run to start the game, Wisconsin (3-0, 12-4) got the statement victory it desperately needed, defeating the Illini by a final score of 74-51.

PASADENA, Calif.—Since Montee Ball announced he would return for his senior season 360 days ago, almost nothing has been predictable for the University of Wisconsin football program.

PASADENA, Calif.—Wisconsin has lost its third straight Rose Bowl game, now destined to being nicknamed “the Buffalo Bills of college football.” As with both the 2011 and 2012 editions, the Badgers had a chance to win a Rose Bowl title on the game’s final possession, only to see their hopes crushed when redshirt junior Stanford cornerback Usua Amanam intercepted UW redshirt senior quarterback Curt Phillips with just 2:03 left.

PASADENA, Calif.—When the Wisconsin football team meets No. 6 Stanford in the 99th Rose Bowl later this afternoon, there appear to be more known qualities about the matchup. The Badgers’ opponent is not a little-tested but very talented Texas Christian team or an exotic, high-powered Oregon attack. This is power against power. Strength against strength. Each team relies on fundamentals to power stout front-sevens on defense. Each team has an offense built around a cornerstone talent at running back—Montee Ball for UW and Stepfan Taylor for Stanford (11-2).
