If you could assign a sound to sloppy, starry midnights in the big city with all your best friends (omitting all the cheesy bar-rock and the club bangers), it would probably sound something a little like Birmingham-based Johnny Foreigner. What that actually means, however, is a bit difficult to pin down.

So, every week this semester I’ve used this column to write about movies and I’m going to do the same thing this week. If that surprises you, you’re reading the wrong column.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—On an afternoon that featured feel-good stories and falling records, one fact carries more weight with the Wisconsin football team than any other.

In the Wisconsin football team’s ninth game last season, it lost a heartbreaker in Columbus, Ohio. Not only did freshman quarterback Braxton Miller throw the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds left, but the Badgers had lost on a Hail Mary just seven days earlier to Michigan State.

Indie Coffee has been open for the last eight years and has lived up to this in sense of the word “independent.” JJ Kilmer and her husband were able to create a warm, inviting community meeting place through their love for a certain caffeinated beverage.

Sunday afternoon, in the midst of a good slate of National Football League games, millions of people were glued to the television or a computer screen. Instead of pigskin and fantasy football, though, we watched history.

The Badgers have all but booked their trip to Indianapolis with a dominating 38-14 road win at Purdue Saturday. Of the eligible teams in the Leaders Division, Wisconsin controls a two-game lead in the standings and is the only team to win a conference game so far this season.

You’re looking through your iTunes replaying your favorite songs over and over again, wishing you had some new music for jamming, or you’re grinding through another week of classes thinking that you owe it to yourself to let loose at a live show soon. Look no further than The Frequency, a venue that can satisfy both of those hungers without forcing you to travel great distances or spend too many precious dollars.

To the horror of peers and piss-scented dudes alike, my friend and I recently embarked on a journey to an EDM show in Madison… sober. For many readers, this may never be a possibility to consider, but allow me to enlighten you: It is an option that is as doable as it is enjoyable. I wrote this guide for people like us: the lone wolf of the Zach Galifianakis-led wolf pack that does not happen to partake in certain substances, legal or not, when attending music events. Since arriving to college, I have planted the soles of several pairs of tattered shoes upon the hardwood floors of many events, all of which I have attended sober. (Save the “You’re better than I am…” speech for someone who isn’t human.) While this mental hitchhike occurred through genres trap, indie, and the like, I discovered a formulaic approach to surviving every DJ set and underwhelming moshpit one may encounter through their time in Madison or anywhere else on the planet, no PBR necessary.

The ladies of Dirty Projectors (Amber Coffman, Haley Dekle and newcomer Olga Bell) use their dense interplay of vocal harmonies to provide a powerful backdrop for frontman David Longstreth to warble and modulate over. While Longstreth’s anguished lilt has always characterized Dirty Projectors’ sound, the female vocal section led by Coffman stole the show on the track “Stillness is the Move” off the Projectors’ 2009 breakout record, Bitte Orca.
The track attracted the attention of Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s more indie-inclined younger sister, who covered the song shortly thereafter.
Bassist Nat Baldwin stays out of the vocal arena with the band, though his haunting vocals adorn his solo project's upright bass stylings.

Newly reunited bands certainly feel a lot of pressure from fans and critics alike to perform at standards previously set before a hiatus.

It’s Wednesday night and the seconds are ticking until your paper on the growth of media conglomerates (or any other usual suspect of essay topic) is due tomorrow at 2. You’re fully aware that coffee will be entering your bloodstream in unholy quantities until the first birds of morning are chirping as you type the last words.

There are some things in life you cannot un-see… or un-feel, for that matter. But I think you’ll need a little more background information before I reveal to you the gritty details of my scarring summer experience and the events that led me to reform my views on hygiene, drugs (almost) and society’s capacity to maintain some semblance of human decency.

Get involved and have fun. This is common advice for both new and returning students, and the tried and true method works: people who are involved in extracurricular activities and have healthy social lives are proven to have higher test scores and healthier minds.

About a year and a half ago, Big Ten officials spent hours on end attempting to find the perfect balance between the two, six-member divisions that the conference would be split into. Now though, the balance between the Leaders and Legends divisions already seems a bit unstable.

Wisconsin’s 45-7 win over Penn State last season clinched the Badgers’ spot in the inaugural Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis. This season’s game could be for a trip to Indy.
