You might know Amos Posner. Amos is a film student but still
finds time to write an excellent column in this newspaper, running
on the same Wednesdays that this column runs just a few pages back.
I love him to death, but if I hear \Right Thurr"" one more time, I
will kill Amos Posner.

As an out-of-state student, the most jarring thing I've learned
in my time in Madison is that the state of Wisconsin only has two
seasons: winter and summer. In a good year, there might be one week
in which it is clearly spring or autumn. So it's no wonder that a
malaise always seems to creep over Madison around this time every
year.

The UW men's soccer team (3-4) heads east to Ohio this weekend
for the Dayton Classic, and with them they hope to bring the
increased intensity that they showed last weekend. The Badgers are
coming off a hard fought split last weekend in which they showed
more desire than they had perhaps shown all season. They hope to
add to that and notch a couple victories this weekend.

This time of year, there isn't much to look forward to in
Madison; the mile-long line at the bookstore, new apartments sans
air conditioning and the hellish reconstruction of Johnson
Street.??But do not fret-our great city has once again prepared a
hearty \welcome back"" party for hungry, perspiring Madisonians
like yourself.

As a graduating senior, one must learn to say goodbye to many
things near and dear to him come commencement time in mid-May.

Occasionally, a completely original band will come around and
instantly change the face of the music world. This is the exception
to the norm, however, as most changes in music trends are gradual,
logical extensions of the foundation set by preexisting bands. The
rock revival that culminated last year, for instance, was
foreshadowed by a renewed interest in the late '60s garage bands
like the Stooges or the MC5, bands that rock revival acts cited as
particularly influential. It's worthwhile, then, to examine several
other bands that have become regarded recently as increasingly
influential as they can help give us a decent indication of where
rock music is headed.

Men's hockey did not treat Madison well this year. The freshman
fans of Wisconsin hockey received a poor initiation into the world
of Badger sports, while the seniors could only console themselves
with memories of Dany Heatley. Many of the faithful have lately
been asking themselves how it has come to this.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, Madison rocks. While campus
tours may boast College Library's national reputation as the place
to pick up a date, this time the magazine is focused on Madison's
music scene.

Despite a thrilling overtime victory Friday against the Bulldogs
of Minnesota-Duluth, the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team
fell short of collecting its first weekend sweep this year in the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Considering the $42 ticket price, a sterile and unintimate
concert venue and Coke commercials, the Counting Crows' current
tour will prove to be a pivotal moment for the band. It can decide
to either sell out into the extreme mainstream full of groupie fans
and corporate endorsements or remain in the less popular realm that
its fans love it for.

If the measure of a band's quality is the company that they
keep, Soulive must be superb. Perhaps best known for their
collaboration with Talib Kweli, this groove-oriented soul band has
also worked with diverse acts ranging from Black Thought of the
Roots to ??berjammer John Scofield. They pull into Luther's Blues,
1401 University Ave., Friday night at 10 p.m., and drummer Alan
Evans chatted with the Cardinal.

In the midst of its ninth year of making music, Boston-based
trio Karate is touring in support of its fifth album, Some Boots.
Due to the eclectic nature of its discography, Karate has become
synonymous with mixing genres and borrowing from improvised jazz.
Some Boots follows this trend, but lends itself more heavily to
rock than jazz and even spices things up with some elements of
funk. It is possible that the only thing that remains constant
throughout Karate's catalog of albums is the insightful lyrics and
fresh vocals of singer/ guitarist Geoff Farina. The Daily Cardinal
recently spoke with Farina about what has kept the band together
for all this time, the indie-rock scene both in Boston and in
general, and how Karate creates its unique sound.

These days, George Clinton is perceived as an affable
free-spirit, a court jester from Chocolate City. The trail of
admiration that follows him around is nothing but positive, but
what sometimes gets overlooked in a maze of neon hair and funky
slogans is his immense influence on the music of today. As the
frontman and ringleader of seminal funk bands Parliament and
Funkadelic, he combined gospel, jazz, rock 'n' roll, doo-wop and
more to form a new, fresh sound. Parliament focused more on horns
and ornate arrangements while Funkadelic had a harder rock sound,
but both have had an immeasurable impact on music to this day. They
spawned a number of successful side acts as well, like bass player
Bootsy Collins' Rubber Band and Maceo Parker's Funk All-Stars.

Freekbass is the name of the band and bandleader of a new
five-piece group out of Cincinnati. They incorporate in-your-face
bass lines with horns and synthesizers, all supported by a tight
rhythm section of drums and guitar. The end result is somewhere
between old-school funk, hip-hop and techno. Their debut album Body
Over Mind was released last June and can be previewed at their Web
site: freekbass.com. The band brings their blend of funky,
danceable beats to the Memorial Union terrace this Friday at 9:30
p.m. The Daily Cardinal recently had a chance to talk to Freekbass
about the band and the road.
