After a two-week lull, the Wisconsin men's hockey team returned to the ice at the Kohl Center to take part in the Badger Hockey Showdown New Year's weekend. In the first round, then-No. 4 Wisconsin faced Yale. The matchup went in the record book as an official 1-1 tie, although the Badgers won in a shootout.
At this point in last year's season, the Wisconsin men's hockey team was hitting full stride and in the middle of what would turn out to be a school-record, 15-game unbeaten streak. A year later, the No. 2 Badgers (9-3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 12-4-0 overall) have won three games in a row and seven of their last eight. A rather forgiving schedule over the next month may help the Badgers build up another long streak.
After Saturday's 3-2 victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth (5-4-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 7-5-2 overall) gave Wisconsin (8-3-0, 11-4-0) the sweep and continued a six-game winning streak, Head Coach Mike Eaves was still feeling frustrated. Eaves admitted the team did not have a good week of practice, and it spilled over into the weekend series' play, where the Badgers never found any sort of rhythm.
