It’s both hilarious and ridiculous that Cory Wong’s March 2 show at the Sylvee opens with the main theme of the “Halo” video-game soundtrack, an artifact of meme culture that’s circulated around so ironically that it was the last thing I expected to hear in a packed concert venue. Somebody standing behind me asked, “Is that what I think it is?”

As temperatures in Madison began to thaw out the snow, the Badgers’ basketball team seemed to thaw out their offense on Wednesday night. Wisconsin (14-9, 6-7 Big Ten) traveled to Penn State (14-10, 5-8) for a crucial Big Ten matchup between two March Madness bubble teams.

Eclectic Japanese alt-rock band CHAI and Brighton-based rock quintet The Heavy Heavy are performing at the Memorial Union Terrace on Oct. 7 and 8, respectively. CHAI will be opened by Madison funk-pop duo JENNY 123; The Heavy Heavy will be opened by Minneapolis indie and punk rock group Creeping Charlie. Hosted by the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Music, the free performances will feature these distinct, memorable artists who each provoke and electrify.

What genre comes to your mind when asked to think of love songs? Maybe radio pop, with an earworm for a hook and catchy production. Or maybe something more singer-songwriter, an instrumentally sparse ballad that dramatically lays out a tragic story. You could’ve even thought outside the box and went with emo rock, which often has a focus on a depressingly hopeless sound conveyed through whiny vocals. But even further outside the box, hiding in plain sight, is the hip-hop love song. Often overlooked and criminally underrated, the best hip-hop love songs demonstrate both musical and lyrical mastery, but with a more laid back style. They provide a unique lens on the topic of love and the emotions and situations that come with it, incorporating humorous undertones and witty lines.

While 2020 and COVID-19 saw the halting of many artist’s careers, slowing down was not in the cards for the internet apt pop/funk sextet Vulfpeck. With an affinity for online antics and a habit of stockpiling recordings, the (mostly) LA-based act has been sufficiently busy this year, demonstrating they are prepared for pandemics to come.
