With the emphasis on tradition in college football, the rumors
that the flagship school of the Lone Star State could be joining
the only BCS conference with a mathematically incorrect name seem
just a bit out of place. Such a move would disrupt geographic
harmony, cut off rivalries and possibly begin the death of a top
conference.

The Wisconsin men's tennis team opened dual season play Saturday
with three overwhelming victories over non-conference foes Butler,
UW-Whitewater and Green Bay.

For just the second time all season, and the first against a
conference foe, the Badgers (5-4 Big Ten, 15-5 overall) dropped a
game at the Kohl Center, falling to the Penn State Nittany Lions
54-43 Thursday night.

Coming back from winter recess is typically strange when
following the Wisconsin men's basketball team. Before the break,
Wisconsin has usually only played games against one or two worthy
foes, which means many questions about how good the team is in a
given year remain unanswered. Then, many students leave Madison for
a month, and by the time they return, the Badgers have then played
in five or six Big Ten games, and fans now have a pretty good idea
of how the team can play that season. Ironically, the period when
most students are out of town is one of the most important
stretches of Wisconsin's schedule.

Columnist's note: Last year at this time, this space was used to
highlight Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema's responsibility for
his team's troubling season. In light of his performance this year,
it is only fair that the following is written.

While most students head to cars, buses and airports and head
home for a relaxing winter break, the Wisconsin men's basketball
team's season trudges on with three more nonconference games,

Last season, the Wisconsin women's basketball team won just five
regular season games away from the Kohl Center. This Friday night,
the Badgers have a chance to eclipse last season's road victory
total with a win over Marquette. That game also marks the
conclusion to a brutal 15-day, six-game road trip for the team.

Head coach Bo Ryan and the men's basketball team are reaping all
the rewards they deserve after last week's success. The Badgers are
coming off arguably one of the biggest wins in the program's recent
history, a 73-69 victory over No. 5 Duke Dec 2. Wisconsin followed
that with a 33-point victory over Grambling State Saturday.

After finishing the regular season with a 9-5-5 record overall
and a third place finish in the Big Ten, the Wisconsin women's
soccer team was expecting an NCAA tournament bid. However, it is
hard to say if anyone predicted the Badgers would win their first
two games of the tournament.

It sounds just like last week: Wisconsin facing a team from
Indiana that suffered through a slew of close losses but has been
playing well for much of the year.

Cincinnati and Texas, the lone unbeatens in the Big East and the
Big-12 respectively, will be put to the test Saturday. Meanwhile,
the winner of the USC and Oregon matchup in Eugene will likely
produce the frontrunner for the Pac-10 title. With Iowa comfortably
leading the Big Ten, some of the middle of the pack teams will try
to separate themselves this weekend.

The mantle for Badger athletics is usually carried by football
and basketball, two sports that have a certain style to them. Both
have an aura of teams that boast less talent than top foes, but can
hang with the best due to strong fundamentals, good coaching and a
slow-paced, disciplined approach. Furthermore, neither sport was
considered a powerhouse in any fashion before 1990, and since have
been seen as spunky overachievers.

Last night the NBA season kicked off, and while I'm excited to
see how it plays out, there is one major weakness that none of the
other ""big three"" sports have: professional basketball does not
have real rivalries.

There are some games in which two bitter rivals battle for every
point, trading the lead until one can will its way to a
close-fought victory. The Daily Cardinal's 24-7 depantsing of The
Badger Herald Friday afternoon was not one of those games.

the top five, teams like Miami, Penn State and Mississippi are now

atop the rankings or will they topple under the pressure?
