Pixar has set a new standard for animation in Hollywood. \Toy
Story"" and ""Monsters, Inc."" lent new humor and insight to
childhood narratives, and ""Finding Nemo"" stole Disney's title as
the home studio of beloved talking animals. But now, with ""The
Incredibles,"" it must be embarrassing to be any other animation
studio. Pixar has not only made another instant-classic family
feature, but they have created a classic suitable for any
audience.

One of the greatest party occasions of the year is fast
approaching-that autumn eve when friends gather to chase away the
threat of vicious, malicious creatures stalking through the shadows
with laughter and libations.

At the beginning of the semester, my poli sci professor offered
my class an intriguing, albeit somewhat unsettling method of
understanding which candidate \average Joe"" voter will select as
their president on Nov. 2. This method, in the form of a simple
question, is quite telling: Which candidate would you rather sit
down and have a beer with?

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 8-With less than four weeks to go until the
election, President Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John
Kerry both took the offensive in the second presidential debate
Friday night at Washington University in St. Louis.

A couple of years ago, \Swimfan"" topped the North American box
office in its opening week. But more than amounting to merely a
surprise financial success, the teen thriller set a new high mark
for ridiculous and badly conceived premises. The movie was designed
to be a typical morality tale, in which a star high school swimmer
cheats on his girlfriend and then watches his life unravel as his
secret breast-stroke partner turns possessive and homicidal.

America is ready for a new sweetheart. Julia Roberts, Sandra
Bullock and Meg Ryan are all on the way out, and the current batch
of high-powered leading ladies-Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and
Catherine Zeta-Jones-are not cut out for the romantic, sympathetic
and funny roles that characterize the lofty title. So who is ready
to step in? That's a tough question. But The Daily Cardinal is here
to break down some of the contenders exiting and entering the
\Sweetheart Battle Royale.""

Tune in, turn on and try not to yawn, the presidential debates
are here. All you need to know about these debates is this:
\Candidates may not ask each other direct questions."" That quote
is lifted directly from the debate's official rules and was
instituted at the behest of the Bush campaign. The fact that Bush
does not want Kerry asking any questions tells us a lot about both
men.

Kenneth Turan is not a great movie critic. He approaches his
work with respect and dignity, and he has solid taste in movies.
But his reviews in the Los Angeles Times are flat; they offer
decent basic analysis, but rarely provide any notable or
interesting insight. He is a useful guide to new movies on a week
to week basis, but he is purely run-of-the-mill. His writing has no
special draw to it, lacking the generous warmth and history of
Roger Ebert or the cutting versatility and wonderful voice of the
New York Times' A.O. Scott.

With the presidential election just 37 days away, the latest
polls across the country still show a close race between President
Bush and John Kerry. Most polls show about a 45-43 race between
voters that are completely committed to their candidate. That is,
Bush could snort cocaine with his dog in Crawford and still would
get 45 percent from the \W"" supporters. Kerry could punch a
Catholic priest for denying him Communion and would still garner 43
percent.

The Daily Cardinal recently published a letter to the editor

""a typical liberal."" In addition, the Cardinal's headline for the
letter was ""Barbash Just Another Liberal.""

The who's who of liberal presidential candidates descended upon
Madison Wednesday and liberal voters were left to decide between
one candidate's potentially successful yet intellectually
uninspiring fare, and the other's ground-breaking socially
progressive message, which at best is slowly losing its
once-popular grassroots momentum. And while Wisconsin's reputation
as a swing state surely has not gone unnoticed, if anyone is still
undecided, they surely are not considering between President Bush
and Sen. Kerry, rather, between Kerry and independent consumer
advocate Ralph Nader.

Nick Barbash's column (\Republicans' slanderous election tactics

When Pandora Cinema released \Donnie Darko"" in 2001, the only
thing more unexpectedly disturbing than the film's puzzling ending
was its miserable box office performance.

With senior wide receiver Lee Evans at the helm, success should
have been a given. But somehow the Badgers squandered what ended up
being a triumphant return from a knee injury two years ago by Evans
and floundered mid-season, after preseason picks had the football
team winning the Big Ten.

At this time one year ago, the Wisconsin men's hockey team was
named the year's Biggest Flop of 2003 by this publication. After
finishing with a 13-23-4 overall record last season, many longtime
fans quickly gave up hope on Eaves and the program. But the coach
quickly put an end to that mentality, delivering a 22-13-8 season
which saw Wisconsin return to the national scene and Eaves garner
USCHO.com's coach of the year.

Near Stirling Castle in Scotland, there is a memorial to the
rebellious Scot William Wallace. At the base of this memorial is a
statue of the near-mythological hero-and to much surprise, his face
is not that of Wallace as depicted by earlier works of art, but
rather is quite similar to Mel Gibson's.

Spring break witnessed several Wisconsin programs struggling to
succeed. The men's basketball team flopped in Milwaukee, men's
hockey melted against Alaska-Anchorage in the WCHA tournament and
the softball team suffered a disappointing 4-6 week in California
that dropped it from near the top of the Big Ten teams to the
bottom. Unlike the other two teams, the softball team is not in the
postseason and can make up for the letdown by turning it around
this weekend. The last weekend before the Big Ten season starts,
Wisconsin (15-12) will play two games apiece against Ball State
(6-15) and Big Ten rival Iowa (15-12) at the Hawkeye
Classic.
