“Vanity project” isn’t exactly an insult. Contrary to certain websites’ critiques, “vanity project” can actually be a compliment. It represents an artist creating for themselves, building a work specifically for and around their ego. It means that, whatever the product is, it’s an expression of that artist at that single moment in time: the “honesty” that so many music fans feel is missing in modern music.

Seeing iLoveMakonnen for the first time live was a sobering experience. I am ashamed to admit that I know almost every lyric from each song on his mixtapes “Drink More Water 4” and “Drink More Water 5.” No, I am not from Atlanta, and no, I do not move bricks of cocaine as my day job, but there’s something electrifying in jumping up and down while belting lyrics that have no relevancy in my daily life. So when he appeared at the Green Stage at Pitchfork Music Festival this summer, I readily buried my thoughts about how I would feel about this music in even 10 years and sang every song I knew.

It’s no secret that Corey Clement is going to be the star of Wisconsin football next year. He’s already got four multi-touchdown games under his belt, and has a career average of seven yards per carry. That’s a higher rushing average than James White, Montee Ball and John Clay. Everyone’s waiting with bated breath to see what he will do, and that’s a lot of pressure.

Most Badgers have probably seen the UW Varsity Band play at some point, either at a football game, pep rally, basketball game or just another random sporting event. These are the Badgers that feel an affinity—love, even—for the school like no other, because they’re at these events cheering our teams on with the band. Seeing the band at games and other events has never been about them though: the band is there to make it more fun, to help us cheer that much harder for our teams. However it was only this past weekend when I realized that a true Badger hasn’t experienced the varsity band until you’ve seen them at their annual concert.

It’s no secret that teams live and die by their quarterbacks, both at the collegiate and professional level. As Wisconsin fans have endured for years, a team can only go so far on the shoulders of its running backs. When it gets to those crucial third-down situations late in games, teams have to throw the ball, and the ones with the better quarterback usually finish on top.

The prophets have returned from their mountain. Before, Godspeed You! Black Emperor had been tuned to the heavens. Their past gospels were inspired conversations with burning bushes that swallowed detractors in waves of groaned noise. Their crescendos spoke of a heavenly rage and their drones wove psalms of feedback and discontent.

Growing up in the 1980s as a black male in Baltimore presented many unique experiences, from being in constant fear of having to protect one’s own body to a history of hating Duke University lasting longer than most Badgers’ lifetimes.

I’m not a sports fan. I never have been and I probably never will be. Not for lack of trying though because I tried for half of my life to either excel at some sport or really fall in love with one. I couldn’t do either and never do I feel that loss more as when I witness the love and devotion for a sport by thousands, if not millions of people during sporting events.

Chazwick Bradley Bundick, Toro y Moi’s solitary member, is seen as a leading figure in the chillwave movement. His music adapts heavy use of artificially created or enhanced sounds, synthesizers, repeating section of sound material, taking a portion of one sound and reusing it, and heavily filtered vocals with simple melodic lines.
