Students and citizens of Madison can no longer have a cigarette
with their beer, starting July 1, 2005. Yesterday, representatives
of the Madison-Dane County Tavern League, City Council staff,
police and city Alders Zach Brandon, District 7 ,and Mike Verveer,
District 4, met to discuss the implementation of the up-coming
smoking ban.

Today sex is everywhere, and with it follow methods of disease
protection and birth control. Turning on the television, one can
\Talk Sex"" with an old, but perky, Sue Johanson. Walk into a local
store and one might find a bowl of free condoms on the counter. On
the radio are depressing advertisements from girls who unwisely
relied on the pull-out method.

Dear ASM,
(03/04/05 6:00am)
During my senior year of high school, when I was carefully
evaluating the benefits of Michigan State, Minnesota and
UW-Madison, housing was a key issue. Out of all three schools,
Madison was the only one to offer an all-girls dorm. This played a
significant role in my decision because I wasn't sure I was ready
for the co-ed living experience.

The future face of Madison could include a new affordable
housing unit on the 400 block of West Mifflin Street, aesthetically
pleasing elements for a new dorm and a 200-stall public-pool
parking lot according to proposals from the Urban Design Committee
Wednesday night.

Students may no longer need to wait in the cold for campus buses
that are already filled by the time they arrive according to plans
for three different free bus routes circulating through
campus.

Hereditary Fructose Intolerance is a food allergy found in one
of every 22,000 people. Within the UW-Madison student body, this
would be approximately two students. One case is freshman Chelsea
Neitzel. Since the disease is so rare, most food services do not
know about or understand her situation, and she has problems at
restaurants and in the dorms.

Thanks to a brilliant Japanese idea, active video games now
allow lazy-or money-conscious-college students to revel in the same
mindless distractions from the intellectual world that traditional
video games did while burning the weekend's excess calories.

State Street lacked its familiar glow Monday evening after two
underground electrical fires knocked out power on much of the east
side of campus and throughout the downtown business district.
(02/22/05 6:00am)
While Monday meant it was time to get back to the grind for most
Madison residents, thousands of UW-Madison students and staff on
the east side of campus saw their day suddenly grind to a halt
after an electrical fire sparked a two-hour power outage.

Imagine for a minute that you are in your dorm room, apartment
or house and there is a knock at the door. When you open it, I'm
standing there with a puppy. I tell you that you must buy it from
me, care for it and pay its expenses, though it will still belong
to me. I provide you with a list of rules that you must obey. If
you do not comply, I will fine you. If I determine the dog is too
sick and must be put down, you must buy a new one and if you can't
find a new one that is cheaper or just don't have the time to look,
I will sell you another one.

UW-Madison freshman Megan Beckner was sound asleep at 3 a.m. in
Witte Hall when the fire alarm began to ring. Because of past false
alarms, Beckner tried to sleep through the ear-splitting sound, but
after 15 minutes she was forced out into the cold.

I have been a victim of the freshman 15 (well, actually the
freshman 10). I know how it goes. Food lurks around every corner
and one's main source of exercise comes from walking to the fridge
to get more food, down the hall to eat some of your neighbor's
food, or down to the cafeteria to indulge in even more food.

When Todd Denny asked everyone in the room who knows a survivor
of rape to stand up, every person in the room arose from his or her
chair.

While scanning through Yahoo News, I found an article about a
Welsh man who sliced off his own testicles to celebrate Wales
beating England in a highly contested rugby match. Wales hadn't
beaten England in 12 years and before the match the man said that
if Wales won, he would cut off his balls. Following through on his
promise, the fanatic is now in serious condition. This man was
devoted to his team, he kept his promises, and in a moment of
happiness, he gave a little of himself to the team. That's
love.

The committee leading the $35.9 million demolition of Ogg Hall
and building of two new dormitories announced Thursday the new dorm
will have features unlike any of the other university residence
halls.

As I was watching the Super Bowl halftime show this year, I
entered into a state of shock. Paul McCartney's first song, \Drive
My Car""-with it's fabulous chorus, ""Beep-beep, beep-beep
yeah""-moved me to tears (from laughter). Everyone at my dorm's
Super Bowl party could hardly wait for it to be over.

During the cold nights of Midwest winter, the warmth of an
apartment or dorm room is often taken for granted. This Saturday,
the UW-Madison chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be holding its
ninth annual Souper Bowl in hopes of generating enough money to
take one family out of the cold.
