Going to the doctor's office is bad for my health. I went to my
8:45 a.m. appointment Wednesday morning, only to find that the
office was closed until 9. As I sat on the cold cement waiting for
the doors to open, I could feel my cold worsen, my blood pressure
rise and a severe case of spontaneous dental hydroplosion develop.

The beginning moments of dorm life are as overwhelming of an
experience as one could ever imagine: a new environment, new people
and often a new or familiar person to spend lots of intimate time
in the same room with for two semesters. Now try picturing that
person being of the opposite sex - or, even more traumatizing -
your significant other. Around 30 universities, including Stanford,
Penn, Brown and Clark, have embraced the idea of co-ed rooms,
dubbed gender-neutral"" housing.

Recently, the Walgreens located in University Square featured a
display with plastic cups and ping-pong balls located suspiciously
close together. Although the products were packaged separately, a
parent voiced concern to UW Dean of Students Lori Berquam, arguing
the display condoned binge drinking, as plastic cups and ping pong
balls are the main components of beer pong, a popular drinking
game. Berquam called the establishment, and the manager quickly
removed the display and has since taken full responsibility for the
incident.

I usually am a big supporter of the SAFE (Safe Arrival For
Everyone) Nighttime Services. However, this past Saturday night I
had a pretty unpleasant experience with SAFEride. After a house
party my roommates and I hosted, everybody was heading home. There
were three freshman women remaining who called for a SAFEride to
the same Southeast dorm from the Vilas neighborhood. When the cab
got here, the third woman was turned away as per SAFEride's policy
of no more than two riders to a cab. The woman reminded the driver
of the dangerous situation recently developing in the Vilas area,
specifically the multiple armed robberies within a few blocks of
our house, and asked him to forgive the rule. He bluntly responded
with I don't care,"" so she returned to our house to seek our help.
As my roommate approached the cab to speak with the driver, the
taxi pulled away, leaving her on our doorstep.

After reading Thursday's article A New Shade of Green,"" I was
unable to grasp the overall message that Patricia Mo was attempting
to express. Is Patricia Mo stating that students do not know how
nor have the energy to be more environmentally conscious?
Destroying our environment is one of today's most pressing issues.
There has been a tremendous increase in environmental consciousness
on every level, ranging from the fashion industry all the way to
Capitol Hill. In my opinion, Patricia's article discourages student
readers from taking a responsibility to protect this environment by
not realizing herself the significant impact small actions can have
on minimizing our individual eco-footprint.

Nutritionists recommend sticking to the perimeter of the grocery
store in order to buy the most healthy foods. However, with the
cost of groceries rising (five bucks for strawberries) and the
average college student's budget getting smaller and smaller, the
time has come for creative and thrifty trips to the supermarket.

I was alone, watching a movie at the start of freshman year,
when the phone rang. The ordinary impulse would've been to pause

I had not come to think of as my own in the few days living with
it.

When I was in high school, I remember mentally tallying the days
until I would be free from the death grip of my parents and move
into my dorm. I salivated at the thought of living two and a half
hours away - away from all of the annoyances that come with living
at home with your family - the fights about having to eat the dry
chicken mom slaved all day cooking, who will pick up the dog shit,
whose turn it was to drive grandma to get her hair done and listen
to her whine about the appliances that don't work in her condo (all
of which really do).
