When minority students arrive at predominantly white system schools, campus climate surveys routeinly show that they feel out of place. A new initiative at UW-Stout aims to make their transition a little easier.

Somehow, August is already here. And, it is almost half over. Move in day is right around the corner, and I am going to go out on a limb here by guessing you probably still aren’t packed.

As summer finally begins to wind down, college kids across the country start gearing up for the semester. For some, like the seniors and others who just do not care, this may not be a big deal. They might be waiting until the night before to begin throwing things into boxes.

A recent outbreak of the dreaded meat sweats has paralyzed the residents of the dorm floor below you. All through Sunday night the sounds of people breathing heavily echoed up from the stairwell, the chomping and swallowing noises unceasing in their vulgarity.

Many questions are being asked of Mark Zuckerberg. The 33-year-old CEO testified in front of Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday about the data harvesting of 50 million Facebook users by a British political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica, and other privacy concerns brought about by the Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

As Wisconsin weather slowly gets more and more ridiculous, problems typically reserved for the winter months are becoming prevalent once again for students on their daily commute. Students are being punished by Mother Nature for leaving their parkas and footwear with traction at home, and one student had enough after an unfortunate encounter with the pavement at the University and Charter intersection.

Attempts to encourage UW-Madison’s student body to have a say in choosing their student representatives proved mostly futile last week after just 6 percent voted in the Associated Students of Madison student election — the lowest turnout in 10 years.

Anybody who knows anything about the UW-Madison campus knows that Southeast is the fun side of town, where every room smells like a mixture of vodka and sex, and that Lakeshore is the so-quiet-you-could-hear-a-pin-drop jail for nerds and weirdos. Those who have the misfortune of being banished to this faraway boring hellhole are condemned to a life of studying for midterms up to three weeks before they happen and actually reading the Go Big Read book.

It’s not just a high school movement.

Okay, so you made it to the library to hunker down and be productive but, that’s only half the battle. Funny how each time a student walks through the doors of College or Memorial Library, they believe that a wave of motivation will wash over them. In reality, this usually doesn’t happen. The sheer fact that we have graced this studious space with our presence seems to be enough effort for the rest of the day.

I love my life here at college, but there’s one thing that I’m not totally satisfied with--my dorm room. I find it kind of bland and a little “college-y,” if that makes sense. My roommate and I have tried to decorate it with posters and photos, but the walls look kind of sloppy. I really like having a relaxing personal space, and I don’t feel that at ease in my own dorm room, so I’m really looking for help here--what can the experts tell me about decorating the walls of my dorm room? I know it sounds like a silly question, but since I’m not allowed to paint them or anything, and since I care so much about the space I live in, I really was hoping for advanced professional advice.

With so few Native American students on campus, forming connections with other Native students is key for living on a majority white campus. But imagine if being a part of that community is contingent on whether or not student leaders are able to find you.

Madison, like much of Wisconsin, was the land of Native Americans before European settlers colonized it. In the early 1800s, what is now Madison was known as “the land of the four lakes” and belonged to the Ho-Chunk nation. Fast forward nearly 200 years later and Madison has practically erased any history of the Ho-Chunk that called it home for much longer than we have.

Former UW-Madison student Alec Cook is set to begin his first of seven trials on Feb. 26 in Jefferson County. Cook faces a total of 21 charges, six of which will be covered in the first trial. Before it begins, here are five themes to watch heading into the trial:

After over two weeks of pushback from student organizations and shared governance groups, changes will be made to the controversial meal plan that will require new dorm residents to deposit a minimum of $1,400 onto their WisCard for dining, university officials said Friday.

In the history of UW-Madison, one could argue there has never been a "dull" semester on campus. The fall of 2017 saw the university's first concrete data on campus climate and food insecurity, new punishments for student protestors and increased crime. Sound like a lot to remember? The Daily Cardinal has you covered. Get debriefed on the top ten things that happened on campus this semester with our Top Ten News.

Recently the University released a policy proposal to mandate a $1,400 non-refundable dining hall deposit for incoming freshman living in the dorms. The deposit would only be available for use at campus dining halls and unions and students would make four $350 quarterly deposits. If the funds are not spent before the school year is out, they go to the University and students receive only an email reminder to use the money before it disappears.

A new dining policy has sparked backlash on campus, but UW-Madison housing leaders are hoping that providing additional information will help quell students’ concerns.
