Across the country, 24 states - including Wisconsins neighbors
Illinois and Minnesota - have passed statewide smoking bans.
Wisconsin, on the other hand, has failed to pass a similar
statewide ban every year since 2003. On Thursday, the Dane County
Board voted in favor of a county-wide smoking ban, placing greater
pressure on state lawmakers to realize the pressing need for a
uniform, statewide ban on public smoking.

Call me crazy, but despite the number of summer-movie classics
2008 has begotten, I am not sad to see moviegoing season go by the
wayside. The reason? Movie audiences are REALLY annoying. Here are
four inept moviegoers that have soured my theater enjoyment this
summer:

I wonder why you have to see some bands live before you can
truly appreciate their music. For instance, I had heard of Okkervil
River long before I saw them live, but never connected with their
music until I saw them open for the New Pornographers last April.
After seeing them live, their music was completely different.

I didn't wake up intending to fight. Some warriors say it is in
their blood, but none want it in their cup of morning coffee.

Guess where I'm sitting right now, writing this column? Yeah,
that's me, hunched over the computer on the third floor of College
Library, nearly crying due to my recent misfortune. The computer
lab is largely empty because it's still syllabus week, and only
serious people with serious majors are thinking about serious
things like term papers. Unless you're like me and are in big
trouble and you're seriously thinking about being robbed - because
you have been.

I had been eating most of my lunches at Subway anyway, given its
proximity to my summer job, so there was nothing out of the
ordinary that prompted that visit.

Like approximately 9,000 other students at UW-Madison, July 7
was one of the worst days of my college career. With the simple
phrase, You did not receive tickets,"" the UW Ticket Office smashed
my hopes of another season spent ""Jumping Around"" Camp
Randall.

Last year, Wisconsin's secondary was relatively inexperienced,
with the exception of all-Big Ten cornerback Jack Ikegwuonu. Even
with Ikegwuonu, the defensive backfield struggled and became prone
to giving up the big play. Now Ikegwuonu is gone, but the Badgers
are hoping last year's experience and a new addition in the
secondary will help improve the unit.

It seems these days any group of guys can put out a pop-punk
album. Forever The Sickest Kids' debut release 'Underdog Alma
Mater' tries to blend pop-punk and techno with little success.

Ford Madox Ford, one of those pretentious modern writers, had
his narrator declare throughout the entirety of The Good Soldier""
that it was ""the saddest story."" But really, what did he know?
The following is one of the saddest stories I have ever heard, let
alone experienced. And, of course, it involves food.

It's hard to know how to look at Flight of the Conchords. What
comes first, the hilarious HBO series or the music? Exactly how
seriously do Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement take themselves as
musicians? Anyone who followed the HBO series knows they're
obviously outstanding comedians, but how are they as songwriters?
Well, as displayed on their self-titled debut, better than one
would think.

The Mifflin Street Block Party is coming up soon. If I remember
correctly, the block party is pretty fun, but then again, anyone
who says they can remember being at the Mifflin Street Block Party
obviously wasn't there.

The UW football team was supposed to be playing Virginia Tech

Instead, it will be the UW basketball team taking on the Hokies in

Payable On Death's seventh album, _When Angels and Serpents
Dance_, marks a step in a different but finally progressive
direction for the battle-tested, 15-year hard rock veterans from
the Southtown"" (San Ysidro, Calif.). Two subpar studio releases
removed from their most celebrated work to date in _Satellite_,
P.O.D. reunite with founding guitarist Marcos Curiel more
motivated, creative and mature, offering a textured, musically rich
collection of tracks with the characteristic spiritual undertones
and Latin zest - but this time with the amplifier dialed down a few
notches from 11.
