The race for county supervisor is on. While some candidates,
namely Ech Vedder, District 5, and Tom Powell, District 8, recently
have been criticized in the news for their campaign techniques of
going door-to-door in the dorms, this is one of the great ways of
getting their message to otherwise often clueless students. This
tactic can be a very informative experience for many first- and
second-year students who may not otherwise search out the
information on the candidates.

Being the most reputable group hailing from Milwaukee, The Rusty
P's have opened for just about every major hip-hop act that has
rolled through the Brew City. They bring the flow to the Annex,
1206 Regent St., tonight for a hip-hop showcase, and those in
attendance can expect a mix of intelligent lyrics and danceable
beats. Cardinal Arts chatted with emcee Adam Haupt about the
concert.

Since Soul Coughing broke up in March of 2000, frontman Mike
Doughty has gained a first name, lost a backing band and released a
solo album, , which is available only through his Web site. He has
toured solo extensively, playing a mix of reworked Soul Coughing
songs and new material. Before bringing his one-man act to the
Orpheum Thursday night, he chatted with The Daily Cardinal.

The invention of the telephone late in the 1800s was a major
step in making communication over long distances easier. In the
digital age, personal computers and the Internet have been further
shrinking the space between people. Now, wireless communications
are bringing people closer together than ever before, according to
Daniel Vanderweide, associate professor of electrical and computer
engineering.

Almost everyone knows two'and only two'things about Amsterdam.
One, it's legal to smoke pot (it's not really, but that's another
column). Two, prostitution is legal. Indeed, certain kinds of
prostitution are legal.

If one were asked to name the tools of the artist, one would
probably start with the paintbrush or pencil and run through dozens
more before getting to the digital video camera, computer and
Internet connection. However, ever since electronic technology
started appearing on the market, artists have been using it.

Struggling over how to deal with budget cuts proposed Jan. 22 by

costs.

First off, I'd like to preface this article by kindly pointing
out that my residents are full of it. You know how your friends can
be'they take one little thing you do and they blow it up to epic
proportions until they're convinced that it's bigger than it really
is. So let me state for the record, I AM NOT addicted to Dr. Mario.
That's just ridiculous.

It's been over two months since the jet-propelled bombs hurled
themselves on the monumental landmarks of a great city, causing
mayhem and hysteria that shook the world. America today feels
vulnerable and, to put it distastefully, a part of the eal world""
where terrorists are as much a reality as football on Monday night.
Two summers ago in India, I had a brief but very enlightening (for
lack of a better word) experience in interacting with an Indian
Army officer just back from Kashmir after a posting in the valley
fighting the terrorism of the same Mujahedeen fighters trained in
Taliban's training camps. Here are certain facts that might help
Americans to better understand the perils of the people who they
regard as their enemy.

The popular image of Internet romance is that of two lonely and
socially inept people typing remarkably improbable things to each
other over a chat service of some sort, or the online intrigue in
which Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan got involved in the film \You've Got
Mail."" However, Internet personal ads, like their newspaper-based
counterparts, focus on getting people together in real life.

The Yang house is silent and dark. A white custom Chevy van
waits in the driveway, gradually losing its fight with rust. Across
the street, a defective streetlight hesitates and flickers off.
Suddenly, the Yang rooster crows from the garage. The streetlight
flickers back on. The rooster crows again, insistent this time.
Once more.

Los Angeles has been the promised land for many musicians
throughout the ages. It seems no matter who you are, if your band
builds a following on the West Coast club circuit, people talk and
record labels take notice. In the case of Black Rebel Motorcycle
Club, lots of labels came calling. But in the end Virgin Records
was the only company willing to give Black Rebel the creative
freedom it desired. This freedom is quite evident on the band's
self-titled debut album, which displays Black Rebel's total control
of the recording and producing process conducted in its home
studio.

Quasi has had a way of intriguing listeners over the course of
its last four albums with its strangely happy melodies and
frequently dreary lyrics, in combination with a sound heavily
dependent on the Roxichord, a vintage keyboard best described as an
electric harpsichord. Perhaps more famous for the history of its
band members'an ex-husband-and-wife duo consisting of
keyboardist/singer Sam Coomes, who also played in the band
Heatmeiser with Elliott Smith way back when, and drummer Janet
Weiss, perhaps better known for her percussive contributions to
Sleater-Kinney'Quasi has received both critical blessings and an
appreciative fan base. Coomes took a few minutes to chat with
Cardinal Arts prior to embarking on a North American tour to
promote their new album, The Sword of God. Look for the band in
Madison Sept. 25 at the Annex, 1206 Regent St.

Never tired of hyping their latest album, 1997's Four Minute
Mile, The Get Up Kids are on the road again, this time as the
glistening openers for the Green Day tour. Perhaps best known in
Madison for their auspicious performance at Club 770, these Kansas
City natives are hoping to break into airwave territory through
their stint with Billy Joe and company. The Daily Cardinal chatted
recently with Ryan Pope, the band's drummer, who admits that The
Get Up Kids are the hottest thing out of K.C. since barbecued
ribs.
