The Badgers' 41-24 victory in Champaign, Ill., Saturday was
little cause for celebration. The Badger offense returned to form,
but the defense was cause for concern. UW had its hands full trying
to top last week's defensive performance against Purdue, which
featured innumerable big plays, but seemingly overlooked the
cumbersome load that was Illinois' junior quarterback Tim
Brasic.

Ass-kissing and sports writing go together like peanut butter
and jelly or the Minnesota Vikings and handcuffs. In fact, undue
flattery on the part of writers is second only to... you guessed
it, criticism. And why not? After all, what rational human being is
going to bite the hand that feeds them?

It always seems as though, at least in recent years, the Badgers
rely almost entirely on a strong front four and relentless running
attack to win Big Ten slugfests. While the Badgers have had their
share of shutdown corners over the years'Troy Vincent, Jamar
Flectcher'Wisconsin's defensive secondary hasn't been known for
making big, game-changing plays.

Wisconsin defensive coordinator Bret Bielema is a man with a lot
on his plate. Whether it be a leading a young and depleted defense
coming off a meltdown versus Northwestern or trying to slow a
Laurence Maroney-led Golden Gopher offensive attack, there is no
shortage of tasks the second year coordinator has to juggle.
Surprisingly, there is one thing the Illinois native pays no
attention to??-next year.

When considering whether or not something is a sport, many
debates seem to arise. The thought of cars only making left turns
appearing in a Sportscenter highlight following a spectacular catch
by Chad Johnson or a diving stop by Chone Figgins is pretty
ridiculous. Watching the festively plump John Daly blow two-inch
putts makes one truly question society's definition of an
athlete.

EVANSTON, ILL.??- Prior to this Saturday, the play of the
Wisconsin defense could be described in four simple words: bend but
don't break. However, on a chilly and overcast day in Evanston, the
floodgates finally opened, and the results were disastrous.

An inconsistent secondary proved to be a double-edged sword for
the Wisconsin defense Saturday as the Badgers (2-0 Big Ten, 5-0
overall) triumphed in an sloppy 41-24 contest head coach Barry
Alvarez described as \very uncharacteristic of the way we've played
all year.""

Brett Bell knows the question on everyone's mind as Wisconsin
prepares to host Michigan for the first time since 2001. The
question you want to ask about Saturday being the first time he
will face the Wolverines

The last time the Wisconsin Badgers were able to defeat the
Michigan Wolverines, Bill Clinton was the President of the United
States, Barry Alvarez was in his fifth season as Badger head coach
and freshmen defensive end Matthew Shaughnessy was only eight years
old.

Barry Alvarez knew coming into his final season that the NFL
draft had taken his top four defensive linemen from a year ago.
What the Badgers' head coach could not have predicted was losing
his top two reserves from a year ago as well.

Following close on the heels of Hurricane Ophelia, the force of
nature that is the 2005 Badger offense will look to rain points
upon the Tar Heels and continue their record-setting displays of
the last two weeks. Averaging a staggering 60.5 points per game,
albeit against two porous defenses, head coach Barry Alvarez likes
the Badger's prospects as the level of defensive resistance ramps
up.

Last year, junior linebacker Mark Zalewski came into the season
as one of the few inexperienced players on a veteran defense. He
was quiet and reserved, but he took his time, learned from some of
the older guys, and excelled as the strong side linebacker. He
ranked first on the team in tackles for a loss (11.5), fourth on
the team in sacks (3.5), fifth on the team in tackles (55) and
definitely ranked up there in big hits. For his hard work and great
play, Zalewski was named as Honorable Mention All-Big Ten player by
the media.

After giving up 42 points in a victory over Bowling Green last
Saturday, Barry Alvarez criticized his secondary in his weekly
Monday press conference. The poor coverage prompted the UW head
coach to say, \You know, a couple of our guys, I don't know why
they did practice. They could have done what they did just by
showing up Saturday.""

Booker Stanley is becoming accustomed to life in the limelight.
But the recognition he garnered this off-season was not the
attention the junior running back wants.

\Let me say this: they better get season tickets right now
because before long, they won't be able to.""

When Wisconsin kicks off its season Saturday, it will be the
first game in the newly renovated Camp Randall Stadium. But for the
Badgers, it is a big game for another reason altogether-the
opponent. The game will be a trial by fire for the untested
defense. The contest versus the Bowling Green Falcons does not look
to be an easy one.

UW-Madison football head coach and Athletic Director Barry
Alvarez announced Thursday his retirement as head coach and
introduced Bret Bielema, the Badgers' current defensive
coordinator, as his replacement beginning in January.

The Badgers ended their spring practices with the Cardinal and
White battling to a 14-14 tie in the football team's annual spring
game this past Saturday in Lussier Stadium at Madison La Follette
High School.
