It could not have been drawn up much better for the Wisconsin
football team, which was looking for its first conference victory
of the season. Running with resolve, passing with precision and
defending with speed, the Badgers outclassed Indiana in every
aspect of the game in Saturday's 52-17 rout.

The atmosphere is not likely to compare to last week, but the
Wisconsin Badger football team will be up against the element of
emotion Saturday on the road against Indiana.

When my teams are underdogs, I tend to spend the days leading up
to the game imagining several different scenarios under which the
good guys prevail. These scenarios include (but are definitely not
limited to) last minute buzzer beaters, record-breaking individual
performances and even an occasional improbable game-winning Hail
Mary from the third string walk-on quarterback.

During the week leading up to Saturday's Big Ten opener at No. 6
Michigan, UW head football coach Bret Bielema stressed consistency
in all aspects of the team's play, as the defense and offense had
yet to put together a complete game this season.

ANN ARBOR, MICH.— With the Wolverines' superior talent and
athleticism, momentum was a key in UW's chances to upset No. 6
Michigan on the road Saturday.

ANN ARBOR, MICH.—Despite a solid first-half effort and a good
defensive game, the UW football team's attempt to upset No. 6
Michigan fell short, losing 27-13. Sophomore wide receiver Mario
Manningham burned Badger cornerbacks for 113 yards and two
touchdowns while senior Steve Breaston gave the Wolverines great
field position all game long.

When the subject is UW football, the mentality is 1-0. And
Badger football is the prime topic this weekend, what with the
storyline surrounding Saturday: Big Ten opener against Michigan at
the Big House. For Bret Bielema's Badgers, the proving ground does
not get more firm than this.
(09/21/06 6:00am)
This Saturday the Badgers will be in Ann Arbor, Mich. to play
No. 6 Michigan, who defeated No. 2 Notre Dame this past weekend. If
their 47-21 win over the Irish is any indication, the Wolverines
appear to have hit their stride, just in time to avenge last year's
loss to the Badgers.
(09/18/06 6:00am)
The Badgers' head football coach has a mentality. What that
mentality is, I'm not quite sure. But he did his best to express it
after Saturday's win.
(09/18/06 6:00am)
Though the Wisconsin football team was only 48 hours removed
from a tight 14-0 victory over San Diego State, Saturday's game
seemed like a distant memory Monday at head coach Bret Bielema's
press conference. Most of the talk revolved around the team's
daunting task of opening Big Ten play in Ann Arbor Saturday against
No. 6 Michigan, a team fresh off a crushing 41-17 victory over
then-No.2 Notre Dame.
(09/17/06 6:00am)
Airtight defense and confidence-building measures abounded in
the performance of the Wisconsin football team Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers (3-0) scored a 14-0 victory at Camp Randall Stadium,
one week before their much-anticipated opener in Big Ten
play.
(09/14/06 6:00am)
The Wisconsin football team is set for their third
non-conference game and final tune up before the Big Ten season
begins.
(09/11/06 6:00am)
Considering senior quarterback John Stocco's knee problems
during the off-season and the still-tenuous condition of his
health, it is no surprise that Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema
stressed the importance of quarterback protection at his press
conference Monday.
(09/10/06 6:00am)
A score of 34-10 against a Division 1-AA opponent surely sounds
underwhelming. Relative to expectation, a 24-point margin of
victory is scant. But to be troubled by the Badgers' sub-par play
is to overlook their understandable lack of urgency.
(09/10/06 6:00am)
The scoreboard at the end of Saturday's game at Camp Randall
Stadium between Wisconsin and Western Illinois may have indicated a
carefree win for the Badgers. But even at 34-10, it belied the fact
that this UW football team remains a work in progress.
(09/07/06 6:00am)
An interesting parallel: In its storied history, the Wisconsin
football program has faced Western Illinois once. It was 15 years
ago, at Camp Randall Stadium, where former head coach Barry Alvarez
won for the second time in his career.
(09/06/06 6:00am)
Whenever a new head coach takes over a football program, one of
two paths can be taken: The team can continue on without a hitch,
or the new regime can fall flat on its face. After Saturday night's
convincing 35-14 win over Bowling Green, it is apparent that
first-year head coach Bret Bielema is starting down the right
path.
(09/06/06 6:00am)
First impressions. They may or may not be a good index of where
the Wisconsin Badger football team is headed in its first year
under new head coach Bret Bielema.
(09/05/06 6:00am)
Forty-eight hours after the Badgers' 35-14 win over Bowling
Green, first-year head football coach Bret Bielema met with the
media Monday to discuss the victory and his sentiments heading into
Saturday's home opener against Western Illinois. He focused most of
his time on the performances of the team's new players and the role
he expects them to play come Saturday's game and throughout the
rest of the season.
(09/04/06 6:00am)
For once, the Badgers' repetitive and near-sighted mantra made
sense; on Saturday against Bowling Green, they did play hard, and
were finally able to go 1-0. But while starting the season with a
win is nothing new, almost everything else was.
