What’s in a name? For the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers, a lot. From Aaron to Zander and everything in between, this team keeps stenographers busy and announcers tongue-twisted with a colorful roster that uses the whole alphabet.

Saturday night began with the hope of picking up a signature win for Wisconsin football, but ended with the most bitter of defeats.

Six years ago, Wisconsin and Ohio State met under the lights at Camp Randall Stadium on a night that Badgers fan will never forget.

Football writers Lorin Cox and Andrew Tucker and sports editor Thomas Valtin-Erwin make predictions for Week 4.

The Big Ten was the story of week two as the top four teams won by a combined score of 195-44. After a shocking win over then-No. 5 LSU, the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers solidified their place in the top tier of college football with a 54-10 walloping of Akron. It would have been easy for the Badgers to lose their focus following such a huge upset, but instead they outperformed expectations at the expense of the Zips.

When the Wisconsin Badgers had to nominate a player to be the keynote speaker at the Big Ten Football Kickoff Luncheon, the choice for them was clear — the backup running back.

At the first Republican debate, which seems like an eternity ago, Fox News anchor Bret Baier led off the debate by asking the candidates to raise their hand if they were “unwilling” to pledge their support behind the eventual Republican nominee. Donald Trump, as he always does, won the news cycle by being the only one on stage to raise his hand explaining that he would not support the nominee if he felt he was treated unfairly by the party. At this moment, party officials and Republican office holders became hostage to his bombastic and outlandish campaign.

There’s no change in this week’s power rankings, though Ohio State closed the gap between itself and the Michigan State Spartans. The week was fairly solid for the Big Ten as a majority of its teams wrapped up their non-conference schedules and now turn their attention to the start of Big Ten play.

Like him or not, Wisconsin was an excellent football program when Bret Bielema was at the helm. And it was like that for far longer than those who just want to give credit to Barry Alvarez’s program-building skills would like.

Week 3 of the college football season saw the Big Ten’s first conference game of the year, a matchup between Penn State and Rutgers that resulted in a 28-3 victory for the Nittany Lions.

Preseason AP and FPI rankings have not been as kind to the SEC in recent years as they have been in the past, but that may end soon. SEC teams currently hold the top four spots in FPI—No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 8 LSU, No. 7 Georgia and No. 12 Alabama round out the top.

Sometimes the grass is actually browner on the other side. This may be the case for the new lawns of former Wisconsin head football coaches Gary Andersen and Bret Bielema. Bielema and his gut left for Arkansas in 2012, while Andersen bolted for Oregon State just two years later. Both moves seemed puzzling at the time, so allow me to explain why staying at Wisconsin would have been the wiser choice.

Wisconsin’s defensive players, along with defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, insisted in the week leading up to Saturday’s matchup with Miami (OH) that they would not be taking their Mid-American Conference foes lightly. Bret Bielema probably agrees.

After a relatively disappointing opening weekend, the Big Ten bounced back with a solid Week 2. Big Ten teams went 12-2, including a 3-1 mark against teams from the Power Five conferences (though in fairness, one of those teams was Iowa State). As a result, you’ll notice an incredible lack of movement in this week’s power rankings.

Four decades ago, wolves were added to the Endangered Species Act, and the once expulsed gray wolf trickled back into the Wisconsin wilderness. Protected by federal law, wolves were allowed to grow and spread out among the wooded north, resulting in a resurgence of a species once considered extirpated from the state.
