It has not only been my privilege to represent the students,
faculty and staff of UW-Madison in Congress, it has also been my
good fortune to enjoy life-long ties to this campus. As a very
young child in the 1960s, I attended anti-war rallies on the
Library Mall with my then-undergraduate mother. I saw the wonders
of my grandfather's laboratory at the Enzyme Institute and the
magic of my grandmother's costume shop in the Union Theater.

For all its ups and downs, 2004 was a year that saw remarkably
few dinosaurs. But dinosaur fans, like Cubs fans, have a new rally
cry: wait 'til next year.

Picture this: It's a basketball playoff double-header on ESPN2.
In game one Detroit is taking on New York at Madison Square Garden,
while game two pits Sacramento at Los Angeles at the Staples
Center. Both games are tied and going into the final game of the
series??-one team will advance to the Conference Finals and one
will go home.

Next weekend, I will graduate. My classmates and I will stride
boldly out of the Kohl Center and shout \Look out world, here we
come with our degrees! Prepare to submit to our savage and fickle
whims, for we are college graduates!""

\It gets real annoying, but you just have to ignore it,"" Scout
Niblett says of the comparisons between her and Chan Marshall, the
woman behind Cat Power. ""I had these ideas of like, next time
someone mentions it in a review or actually says 'You remind me of
Cat Power,' being like, 'Well, should I just, like, not make a
record, then? Do you just want to go out and buy a Cat Power or PJ
Harvey record instead?' I mean, it's gotten to the point where it
happens that often.""

College Republicans meeting Tuesday night in an effort to boost

What if the government imposed a tax on every individual in
America? The money from the tax would go into a savings account
with no annual return. Asserting my right to invest my money as I
wish, I tell the government, \No thank you. I am rather strapped
for cash and would like to invest a portion of my money in a 401(k)
plan or IRA with an average annual return of 4 percent.""

I tried not to fall for it. Lou, I said, don't fall for it. (I
call myself Lou because internal dialogue is all about efficiency.)
You'll only end up getting hurt, I said. I should have listened to
myself. But no. I just kept right on thinking, \Spring is here."" I
stopped wearing gloves or a hat. I even looked at a few flower beds
for bulb shoots.

Blue-chip high school athletes and collegians with the skills to
go pro are often hounded by unscrupulous sports agents offering
lavish gifts in exchange for signing a contract that would,
according to National Collegiate Athletic Association rules, bar an
athlete from competing in college sports, say members of the
Wisconsin state Assembly.

Gays and lesbians face accusations of depravity and immorality
every day. Someone is always ready to charge them with corrupting
marriage, call them too irresponsible to raise children or blame
them for spreading disease.

On this day five years ago, John Glenn, the first American to
orbit the Earth, returned to travel the stars aboard the space
shuttle Discovery. His 1962 adventure into space advanced science
and engaged the imagination of a nation eager to explore. His
return in 1998, however, failed to impress an American public bored
by decades of the shuttle routine.

After the attacks in 2001 on the eastern part of the United
States, President Bush said the United States will make no
distinction between those who plan terrorist attacks and those who
harbor terrorists.??A bold statement like this brings up important
questions about how much the Bush family, the FBI and the CIA have
done to encourage terrorism.

As the weekend ended and classes began again, the remnants of
body paint smeared by rain started to fade. The hangover started to
clear up and everybody's favorite streaker paid his fine and
continued to warm up, leaving Saturday night a memory. And just
when it looked like this weekend would be just another \average""
football game, ESPN announced that GameDay will broadcast from the
Mad City on Saturday. So, for everyone who missed out on their
television break when MTV didn't accept you to fill the quota spot
on Real World or Road Rules, this is your second chance. Here's
your guide for getting noticed this weekend amidst all the hype
surrounding the Wisconsin football team:

Two upcoming hip-hop albums by white artists have left me with

Jennifer Karlin and Amelia Borofsky's \Regeneration: Telling
Stories from Our Twenties"" is clearly targeted towards a
college-aged crowed. The two editors have compiled numerous tales
on a variety of subjects that hit close to home with all of us.
Unfortunately, the absence of stories with a unique focus and
strong individuality holds the collection back from reaching its
true potential.

Now that the war with Iraq is coming to a close, the summer is
drawing nearer and college basketball is sadly over, what else does
President Bush have to do than attack Syria? The war with Iraq is
not yet checked off Bush's \to do"" list, yet officials warned
Syria to report all weapons of mass destruction and terrorism if
the country wishes to remain at peace. Before the Bush campaign
attempts another frontier attack, they should finish the repairs in
Iraq and turn their heads to view the economic plunder of this
nation.

For a movie-going week with three new wide-release openings,
this one isn't very appetizing. \A Man Apart"" appears to be lame
and clich??-ridden even for Vin Diesel, while, as my brother put
it, ""What a Girl Wants"" seems to be the touching story of a grown
man who learns to fall in love with his own teenage daughter. So
instead, I decided this week to run the third leg of this
semester's Colin Farrell Triple Crown. While ""Phone Booth"" may
have left me still wanting to see Farrell in something a little
more substantive, it easily transcends the level of ""The Recruit""
and ""Daredevil,"" which were awful movies that strictly offered a
taste of Farrell's talent.
